Local Roundup: All 3 city LL teams alive

Frederick American's Elks avoided elimination from the Frederick City Little League Tournament with a 13-5 win over East Frederick 's Rosensteel Monday at Max Kehne Park.

The win means all three city teams remain alive in the double-elimination tournament. The Elks earned a rematch with Frederick National's Lions at 6:30 p.m. Wednesday in an elimination game. The Lions beat the Elks in the first round of the tournament, 10-0.

Rosensteel has a bye in Wednesday's game and faces that winner for the city championship at 6:30 p.m. Thursday.

Rosensteel took a 2-0 lead in the last of the first inning on two Elks errors and a wild pitch. The Elks answered with three runs in the second and sent 11 batters to the plate in a five-run third. Then, they scored three runs in the fifth and two in the sixth to clinch the win.

Maciah Thomas led the Elks with three hits, including two home runs, and five RBIs. He had a three-run homer in the second and a two-run shot in the sixth.

Trace Russ had two hits with a homer and three RBIs. His homer was a leadoff shot in the third. James DeMoss had two hits for Elks.

Russ was the winning pitcher with one earned runs and five strikeouts through five innings. Austin Marrone and Brian Communare each drove in a run for Rosensteel.

American Legion Baseball

Frederick sweeps Funkstown

Nick Meekins and Frank Zier each tossed complete games as Francis Scott Key Post 11 (9-2, 4-0 Western Maryland District) swept a doubleheader from Funkstown on Sunday, 15-5, 6-3.

In the first game Nick Meekins went six innings, allowing four earned runs on four hits and with three walks and 11 strikeouts. He also had three hits.

Brady Wilson had a double, triple, home run and five RBIs and Zier had three hits.

Zier struck out nine in the second game with three walks. He also hit his first home run of the season. Jimmy Lanning had his third homer. Jimmy King added two hits and drove in two runs.

Hillbilly Classic

ELKINS, W. Va. -- Thurmont Post 168 went 4-1 in the Hillbilly Classic.

Thurmont (9-6) defeated Kanawah Valley (Charleston), 11-4; lost to Spring City, Pa., 6-4; then finished with a 5-3 win over Calm, Pa.

Joey Zuniga had an inside-the-park grand slam in the win over Calm. Landon Routzahn had a double with three RBIs in the loss to Spring City.

Thurmont hosts Brunswick 's Steadman-Keenan Post 96 in a 3 p.m. doubleheader Wednesday at Catoctin High School.

Adult Baseball

Boonsboro Pirates 2, Brunswick Express 1

Gave Levac and Dave O'Brien combined to allow six hits for Brunswick (3-5), which plays Mount Airy 's Gold Star Post 191 in a non-league game Wednesday.

College Baseball

Nine FCC players moving on

Nine Frederick Community College baseball players have signed letters of intent to continue their careers at four-year schools. Evan Angle (Penn State-Mont Alto), Nick Caito and Matt Howard (Slippery Rock), Jimmy Gilford (Belhaven), Jake Hockensmith (Virginia-Wise), Ryan Kassab (Long Island University), Ben Scott (Elon), Ryan Starnowsky (Shippensburg) and Mike Walters (Lynchburg) will head to their respective schools this fall.

Junior American Legion

Woodsboro 12-16, Gaithersburg 2-4

Kenny Filler and Ricky Pardo each had five hits on the day to help Woodsboro Post 282 sweep.

Ben Tylicki had four hits for Woodsboro . Ben Martinez had two hits and two RBIs, while Andrew Weaver and Eric Wachter each had three hits.

Pardo earned the win in the first game, and Charles Ausherman won the second game.

Men's Basketball

Randolph picks Hood

Tuscarora's LaQuan Randolph has committed to play basketball this fall at Hood, Blazers coach Tom Dickman said.

Randolph, a 6-foot-1, 173-pound guard, averaged 11 points and nine rebounds for the Titans last season and is a two-time second team all-MVAL-Chesapeake pick. He helped lead the Titans to consecutive conference titles.

"He brings a level of athleticism and aggressiveness that we need," Dickman said.

Round 2: Snow expected to fall today, Wednesday

Fast on the heels of the largest 24-hour snowfall to hit the Frederick County since 1983, meteorologists are predicting another round of heavy snow and wind to hit today.

Even U.S. Marines couldn't hold back tears Monday at the viewing of their colleague, Sgt. David Smith.

The procession to the Frederick Christian Fellowship Church was led by Frederick County Sheriff's deputies. Dressed in full military regalia, Marines carried Smith's casket into the church followed by family members as more Marines stood at attention.
