After Frederick National built a three-run lead two outs into the first inning of its game against Frederick American, the umpires had to suspend play due to lightning on Wednesday.National's bats were on fire at the time, but did not cool off after the hour delay, as the team poured on five runs in each of the first two innings.
Once the game finished, National had weathered the storm with a 13-0 victory over Frederick American in the 9-10 year-old Maryland District Two Little League tournament.
While National was hitting the ball left and right, the player leading the way was pitcher Brennan "Buddha" Lincoln.
The game was called after four innings, with National already exceeding the 10-run rule. Lincoln was the reason for a silent American offense.
Through three and a third innings of work, Lincoln tossed a no-hitter and struck out eight batters. He was forced to leave the game during the fourth inning, after exceeding the 75-pitch cap. "Buddha", who received the nickname as a baby due to his facial features, also was a force on offense. He hit two singles and scored twice.
"I just really wanted to win and keep playing," Lincoln said.
The National offense had 13 hits a day after scoring no runs against Brunswick . John Fowkes and Myles Mensah both had two doubles for National. Mensah also had two runs batted in.
Alex Morrow provided excitement on the base paths, scoring once as a pinch runner and another off a triple. Rounding the bases after a hit to deep right, Morrow reached home after an error by American.
"We switched things up from the Brunswick game," coach Marcus Hall said. "Instead of taking batting practice, we just practice our swing. We were more focused against Frederick American."
Ricardo Pereira, Ryan Hessong, Sam Krause and Trevon Brisbane all drew walks for Frederick American.
Frederick National advances to play at Westminster tonight in an elimination-round game. Westminster lost to East Frederick , 14-0, Wednesday night. Four County, after losing to Brunswick , plays at Thurmont at 6 p.m. in an elimination-round game.
Brunswick will play at East Frederick in the winner's bracket championship at 6 p.m. Friday.
Brunswick 3, Four County 0
Brunswick -- A three-run rally by Four County in the top of the sixth inning was nullified when the game, which was delayed for more than an hour in the second, was called in the sixth with none out because of rain.
Under Little League rules, once the game becomes official (four innings), if the game is called in the top of an inning and cannot be completed, the score reverts back to the last even inning, assistant District 2 administrator Kevin Smith said.
Brunswick was leading 3-0 after five innings.
A two-run home run by Mays Lane and an RBI double by Hunter Edwards enabled Four County to tie the score at 3-3 with none out. It began raining hard and home plate umpire Tony Russo called the game.
Brunswick scored a run in the fourth on a pinch-hit, RBI single by Noah Hawes. Brunswick got two more runs in the fifth on a two-run double by Tyler Ebberts. Ebberts was the winning pitcher on a five-inning two-hitter with five strikeouts.
