  • Frederick American stayed alive in the District 2 11-12 Little League Tournament with a 16-2 win over East Frederick Monday in an elimination-round game.

    The game was called in the last of the fourth inning because of the 10-run rule.

    American plays at Frederick National (Robert B. Staley Stadium) at 6 p.m. today in another elimination-round game. National eliminated Four County, 12-1 Monday. Thurmont hosts Brunswick in a winner's bracket game tonight at 6.

    "We live to play another day," Frederick American Manager Rick Wilson said. "The key for us was we did a much better job of swinging the bats than we did at Brunswick ."

    American ended up with 14 hits against two East Frederick pitchers. Maciah Thomas had the best day at the plate for American with three hits, just missing cycle.

    Thomas had a lead off triple in the first, a leadoff home run in the second and a single in the third. "The key is to have a level swing and to swing hard," Thomas said. "I was seeing mostly outside and fastball pitches."

    Travis Barbe had two hits with a home run and two RBIs. His homer was a two-run shot in the second. "I like fastball high, up, and in the middle," Barbe said.

    American had four homers in the game. John Mahlachick had a one-out solo shot in the first and Nate Schwemmer hit a shot into the deep corner of right field for an inside-the-park grand slam as part of a 12-batter, seven run third. He ended up with two hits and five RBIs.

    Trace Russ had two hits with a double and two RBIs for American. Teammate Patrick Davis had two hits. Russ pitched a complete-game five-hitter with six strikeouts.

    Jared Ruiz had a solo homer in the first for East Frederick , which also got a run in the fourth on an error. "The kids had their ups and down today," East Frederick manager Ben Fetting said. "They just hit the ball where we weren't."

    National 12, Four County 1

    Jacob Medina had two hits with a home run for National. Nathan Specht had a homer. Kody Blank and David Larson each had two hits. Larson was also the winning pitcher.

    Sunday's Games

    Thurmont 19, Four County 0

    Mark Speak had four hits, including a home run and a double, and teammate Josh Little also had four hits to lead Thurmont to the win on Sunday.

    Collion Fannin struck out six and only allowed three hits for Thurmont , which hosts Brunswick at 6 pm. today in the championship game of the winner's bracket.

    Brunswick 11, American 0

    Brunswick -- Ryan Capstick had two hits with two RBIs for Brunswick in a winner's bracket game. Daniel Patterson and Adam Fitzwater each had a home run.

    Joe Rindone tripled and Doug Pearl had a double. Capstick was the winning pitcher on a five-hitter with 10 strikeouts.

    National 8, Westminster 3

    Blank had two hits with a homer in an elimination-round game. Josh McClain had three hits, including two doubles. Tommy Phelps and Ethan Hite each had two hits.

    Specht was the winning pitcher.

    District 2 Junior League

    Thurmont 25, Westminster 8

    Thurmont -- Austin Boggsw, Connor Cool, Cody Fowler and Seth Schubert each had two hits for Thurmont , which advances to the state tournament, beginning July 27 at Valley (Chewsville, Washington County) Little League.

    Even U.S. Marines couldn't hold back tears Monday at the viewing of their colleague, Sgt. David Smith.

    The procession to the Frederick Christian Fellowship Church was led by Frederick County Sheriff's deputies. Dressed in full military regalia, Marines carried Smith's casket into the church followed by family members as more Marines stood at attention.
