Another LHS star emerges in WR Beisser

New Market -- Opposing defenses know they have to focus on covering star wide receiver Ryan Dixon.

But take Dixon's word for it: Lancers receiver Brandon Beisser is also worth worrying about.

Beisser stands 6-foot-1, he runs hurdles in track and can bench press his fair share in the weight room.

"He's just a nasty dude," Dixon said. "If I was a DB, I'd be afraid to cover him."

Friendship Collegiate Academy defensive backs had no choice on Friday. Beisser had two nice, long touchdown receptions in Linganore 's 48-8 win over the Knights.

Beisser had no varsity touchdown catches before Friday, although he had some receptions. Usually, Dixon is Linganore 's go-to target.

But Dixon had been nicked up during the week after suffering a concussion and knee injury, and the Knights had one of their defensive aces covering the James Madison-bound receiver.

The Lancers (6-0) turned to Beisser, and he didn't disappoint. In the first quarter, he got a step on his defender and held on to a perfectly thrown ball that Nick Marth lofted into the back corner of the end zone for a 24-yard TD grab.

"I ran past the guy and stuck my arms out, and it felt like it was just there," Beisser said.

In the third quarter, his outstretched hands held on to a 25-yard touchdown pass from Marth.

"During practice, he was making big catches, and he did that tonight," Dixon said. "He was one of my best friends. He's a great wide receiver."

High praise coming from Dixon, whose skills as a wide receiver allowed him to earn a scholarship. And he wasn't exaggerating about being friends with Beisser.

In fact, when Beisser was asked which receiver he emulated, he didn't name one of the NFL's top stars. He named Dixon.

"Pretty much just Dixon," Beisser said. "I look up to him a lot."

As Linganore coach Rick Conner said, the Lancers have plenty of talented receivers, a nice thing for a team with such a strong rushing attack. Zach Zwinak rushed for 121 yards and three touchdowns on runs of 37, 23 and 51 yards in the first half, helping the Lancers to a 35-2 lead at halftime.

Zwinak got no carries in the second half, and the big lead was more than enough for Linganore 's stout defense. The Lancers didn't let the Knights score until the 6:02 mark of the fourth quarter, long after the running clock had started.

Defenders like Austin Scates and Anders Johnson helped keep Friendship from getting into an offensive flow. And Linganore 's defense even got in on the scoring act.

Scates forced a fumble by nailing quarterback Chris Griggs. Colby Weierbach alertly scooped up the loose ball and sprinted for a 41-yard touchdown.

Dwayne Randall also scored on a 5-yard run for the Lancers, helping the Lancers cash in after Kyle Warholic recovered a fumble.

Conner credited his scout team, which included players like John Lucas and Chris Baumanis, with helping prepare the Lancers by simulating Friendship. Conner said the Knights had several Division I prospects.

"They're bigger than the Redskins and they have a ton of speed," Conner said.
