New Market -- Lurking in the shadows behind running backs Zach Zwinak and Kevin Myers is senior running back Matt Thomas.

Thomas emerged from relative anonmity and stepped up Thursday night, proving he can shoulder the load and be a playmaker on offense like his senior teammates.

Running behind his massive offensive line, Thomas broke off several explosive runs as he topped 100 yards rushing in just seven carries, scoring two of the Lancers seven touchdowns in a 48-0 win over the Cadets.

"In practice I've been getting more and more reps in case someone gets tired or goes down. I have to be ready to go at any time," Thomas said.

Added Lancer coach Rick Conner, "We played a lot of kids tonight against a really talented Frederick team. They've got some talented kids in their backfield that really make you sweat."

Thomas finished with 118 yards on just eight carries with touchdown runs of 9 and 5 yards. Prior to the game, Thomas had 206 rushing yards and three touchdowns on the season.

"We've got some talent in our backfield and we changed it up tonight with Thomas and those guys didn't miss a beat," Conner said.

Battling a steady rain, the Lancers (7-0) offensive line of Rob Havenstein, Kyle Tucker, Kevin Saylor, Jimmy Rippeon and Sean Rudeau along with tight end Andy Anderson controlled the line of scrimmage as the Lancers ran for 280 yards on the ground.

"That left side holds it down well. It's nice running behind big Rob (Havenstein) and (Kyle) Tucker," Thomas said with a grin.

With three regular season games to play, the Lancers offensive line has helped pave the way for over 2,400 yards rushing this season.

"Coach Brown that coaches our line, he does a great job. That group is a great bunch of guys. They're strong, and they're not just big," Conner said.

Playing most of the second half with a running clock, the Lancer defense pulled off a big play in the final minutes of the fourth quarter as Chris Baumanis stripped the ball from Frederick 's Jalen Gee and ran 84 yards for a touchdown.

"The crazy strip drills we do in practice, I just went in there and got that ball. I didn't even know I had the ball at first," Baumanis said. "I didn't want to look behind me. I wanted that touchdown real bad."

Conner indicated after the game that he would probably give his kids the weekend off after lifting this morning. It's a good thing too, considering the next three games his Lancer team will be facing.

Starting next Friday, Linganore has road games against Tuscarora and Thomas Johnson before returning home for their final home game of the year against rival Urbana .

"Oh my gosh. Friendship Heights last week, Frederick tonight, Tuscarora next week and TJ and Urbana , someone must be mad at us," Conner said. "We're lifting tomorrow, but we'll just take it one day at a time."

Myers finished with 91 yards on 10 carries with three touchdowns as Dwayne Randall added 50 yards on five carries with a touchdown run.

For the Cadets, Deonte Taylor ran 23 times for 136 yards as Jalen Gee had 11 carries for 43 yards.
