WEEK 8 CAPSULESFriday at 7 p.m. Linganore (7-0) at Tuscarora (5-2): This is another critical game for the Titans, who were surprisingly flat in a 41-0 home loss to Thomas Johnson last week. Another loss would make it very difficult for Tuscarora to catch up in the Class 3A West playoff chase. Linganore currently sits in second place in the region. The Lancers ran their regular season unbeaten streak to 17 last week with a 48-0 home win over Frederick , as senior Matt Thomas rushed for 118 yards and two touchdowns on seven carries. Tuscarora has not beaten Linganore in four previous meetings. Last season, Linganore won 35-7 on its home field. Fort Hill (7-0) at Thomas Johnson (5-2): A week after playing one of their best games of the season in a 41-0 win at Tuscarora, the Patriots face another big test against the Class 1A state runner-up from last season. Fort Hill has cruised through its season so far. The Sentinels have won every game by at least 10 points. Their defense has only surrendered 62 points. TJ coach Ben Wright expects them to run their vaunted Wing-T right at the Patriots, saying he expects "a big dose of it, no matter what." TJ, meanwhile, enjoyed one of its best running days of the season last week, rolling up 493 yards on the ground against Tuscarora. Nick Forbes had 180 yards and three touchdowns, while Jeremy Grove rushed for 130 and a score. Urbana (7-0) at Frederick (3-4): The Hawks are looking for their first 8-0 start since 2004. Senior running back Zach Herman made a successful return to the lineup last week, rushing for 89 yards and a touchdown on 18 carries in a 16-7 victory over Patterson Mill. The Urbana defense continued to produce turnovers. Matt Semelsberger and Brian Patton each intercepted passes, while Kevin Sowers recovered a fumble. Semelsberger also scored on a 2-yard touchdown run. Frederick , meanwhile, fell to Linganore on the road, 48-0, last week. Deonte Taylor continues to give the Cadets a spark out of the backfield. He ran for 136 yards on 23 carries against the Lancers. Brunswick (3-4) at Middletown (4-3): The Knights have bounced back in a big way, winning their last two games by a 84-6 margin. Quarterback Sam Glushakow was the offensive star in last week's 42-0 victory over North Hagerstown, tossing four touchdown passes to match his total through the first five games. Middletown is currently sixth in the Class 2A West playoff chase and will likely need wins its final three games to have a chance. Brunswick rallied from a 14-point deficit against Smithsburg last week before falling 21-19. The Railroaders could not get the snap down on a game-winning field goal try with one second left, which denied them their first winning streak since the start of the season. Gibbons (4-4) at SJCP (1-6): LaMont Wims was the lone bright spot for the Vikings in last week's 35-8 loss to St. Paul's. He ran for 101 yards and the Vikings' lone touchdown of the game on 21 carries. They are hoping to snap a four-game losing streak against Gibbons. After a 3-0 start, the Crusaders have lost four of their last five, including a 34-22 home loss last week to Boys Latin.Friday at 7:30 p.m. Virginia Lions (3-1-1) at MSD (7-1): The Orioles were originally scheduled to play a home game against St. James tonight. But a flu outbreak at St. James forced the school to close for a few weeks and cancel some athletic events. So, MSD coach and athletic director Andy Bonheyo had to scramble to find a fill-in opponent. It will be the Virginia Lions, who have won two straight games, including a 40-22 victory at Model School for the Deaf on Oct. 8.
