With his helmet used as a crutch while down on a knee, St. John's-Catholic Prep junior quarterback LaMont Wims needed a breather.

The Vikings had just used a timeout to give him one following his third touchdown in the game's first half, as St. John's routed conference foe St. Frances Prep Academy 40-0 on senior night at McCurdy Field.

"This is probably my first time ever having three touchdowns, three different ways and I'm pretty happy about it," Wims said.

Wims scored on a 50-yard touchdown run, threw a 23-yard touchdown pass and returned an interception 60 yards for a score to complete the feat. The trio of touchdowns was completed by the mid-point of the second quarter.

"Everyday (LaMont) has continued to amaze me in a different way," St. John's coach Jimmy Ward said. "He's just a hard-working kid. When you work hard and continue to play 100 percent of the time, good things come."

It didn't take long for the Vikings to break through.

After intercepting St. Frances on the game's opening drive, St. John's quickly marched down the field, smashing the Panthers defense right up the middle on each of its first four plays.

On the following snap, Wims raced right before stopping to reverse direction. He ran around the St. Frances defense, racing down the sideline before cutting in to elude a final defender en route to the 50-yard touchdown.

On the night, Wims racked up 23 carries for 246 yards and a touchdown.

"You've got to start the game off pounding hard," Wims said. "And then late in the game you can bust one long."

After jumping out to a 12-0 first half advantage, St. John's turned the ball over on three consecutive possessions.

It's defense never wilted, holding the Panthers without a first down in the first half after St. Frances' opening drive.

St. John's forced six turnovers, five coming via interceptions. The Vikings (2-7) had three interceptions entering the game.

NOTES: Former St. John's Athletic Director Dave Owens was playing an unusual role Friday night. He was coaching the opposition, as a midseason coaching change thrust Owens into the role for St. Frances. ... Sophomore Nick Peifer led the Vikings with three interceptions. ... Junior receiver DeShawn Weaver registered three receptions for 105 yards and a touchdown. ... St. John's ends its season at Archbishop Spalding next Friday night.
