Titans boys take care of business

A year after embracing the role of underdog en route to a remarkable run to the Class 3A state title, the Tuscarora boys soccer team found itself relishing a much different role heading into it's playoff opener this year -- that of the favorite.

The Titans (12-2) appeared up to the challenge in their 3A West Regional quarterfinal, overwhelming Quince Orchard 5-1 at Linganore High School on Tuesday night.

"Somebody was going to go home tonight," Tuscarora coach Marty Stiteler said. "We had a job to do and we took care of business early."

Tuscarora advances to host the winner of the Seneca Valley-Watkins Mill game Thursday night in the semifinals.

On Tuesday, the Titans earned their first corner kick in the second minute and broke on top just two minutes later.

Senior midfielder Wayne Craig used his 6-foot-5 frame to launch a throw in into the Cougars box. The loose ball was won by senior midfielder Quinn Meehan, who quickly placed the ball inside the right post from point-blank range to give the Titans a 1-0 lead.

"We do that in pre-game and in practices," Craig said of his throw. "We work on those (plays)."

Tuscarora dominated the flow of play, not allowing Quince Orchard to carry the ball into its offensive third until the sixth minute. The Cougars failed to register a shot attempt until the 17th minute.

In the 25th minute, the Titans took advantage of a costly Cougars turnover.

Quince Orchard rushed the ball upfield, but lost the ball in the flow of play to Tuscarora, which pushed forward with numbers. Senior forward Oscar Medrano played the ball to senior midfielder Ritchie Reyes, whose play forced a corner kick.

The resulting corner was rifled home from the top of the box by junior midfielder Michael Greene putting the Titans atop, 2-0.

Eight minutes later Tuscarora put the game away.

Sophomore midfielder Christian Yarros notched the first of his three assists, beautifully touching the ball back into space for Reyes, whose strike from the top of the box was perfectly placed inside the far post for the Titans' third goal of the first half.

Craig and junior midfielder Justin Yates scored for Tuscarora in the second half as five different Titans tallied goals in the playoff victory.

Leading 5-0 in the waning moments of the contest, Quince Orchard got on the board as senior forward Fombod Chunga scored on a 40-yard blast from straightaway.

"With the way we ended (the regular season)," Stiteler said, "we wanted to try to gain some momentum."
