Urbana -- The Urbana High School girls soccer team secured a spot in the 4A North Region championship, routing Kenwood, 7-0, Friday evening in semifinal play.Twin sisters Amie and Julie Ruh? combined for five goals for the Hawks -- all of which were scored within the first 20 minutes of the game.
"The core of our team is Amie and Julie Ruh?," Urbana coach Chuck Nichols said. "They're two legitimate players."
It's been like that all season for the 14-2 Hawks. The sisters are the team's top two scorers. Julie, a forward who will play soccer for Radford next fall, the leads Urbana with 19 goals. Amie, a midfielder who has committed to Seton Hall, has amassed seven goals and nine assists.
The Ruh?s often fuel one another. In fact, Julie registered assists on two of Amie's goals against Kenwood.
Along with the sisters, Urbana 's key to its successful season is an arsenal of well-rounded players.
"I think we have the ability to hurt people in a lot of ways," Nichols said. "We can score from the strikers on top, We're really dangerous and athletic out-wide, and we're really deep. We have some brilliant players."
After the five Ruh? goals, Urbana took a 6-0 lead over Kenwood at halftime off a goal by sophomore Sarah Micol.
In the second period, freshman Jenny Marshall scored the Hawks' final goal with a header from Amie Ruh?.
Marshall and Katie Parness each finished with two assists, while Urbana 's defense prevented Kenwood from having a single shot on goal.
Although Urbana enjoyed a comfortable lead against Kenwood, Nichols knows that Tuesday's match against Thomas Johnson will be a challenge.
"We have a really tough opponent coming up in regional finals," he said. "They are very well-coached."
Last season, Urbana lost in the regional finals to Bethesda-Chevy Chase, the eventual state champion.
