A motivated Beck broke that record Tuesday, and Wetzel wasn't surprised. Years ago, he saw how goal-oriented Beck was.

Wetzel was Beck's seventh grade social studies teacher at Walkersville Middle School. Back then, Beck saw a magazine ad for a pair of red adidas cleats. She wanted those cleats and knew she'd have to earn them.

"I'd make deals with my dad," she said, referring to Frederick girls coach Jim Beck. "If I scored so many goals, he'd get me cleats."

She cut out the ad for the cleats and had Wetzel hang it up near the chalkboard in the back of his classroom, near pictures of his Walkersville teams. Beck wanted to be reminded of the goal she was working toward. She also liked that the ad was next to photos of Walkersville 's soccer team, which she hoped to play for one day.

Did she get those cleats?

"I did," she said. "If you put cleats in front of me as a goal, I'll get it."

Wetzel brought this story up when talking about Beck's drive, a trait that helped her become Walkersville 's all-time leading scorer.

In Tuesday's win over Brunswick , she tied the career mark with a goal in the first half. And in the second half, she scored her 32nd goal, breaking the record set by Kelly Martin in 2000.

Beck's historic goal came from outside the 18, finding its way into the right corner of the net. An announcement acknowledged that she was the most prolific scorer in Walkersville girls soccer history.

"It was really cool to get it," Beck said.

It's still September of her junior season, so Beck has plenty of time to add to her career total.

She started her march to the record as a freshman, scoring her first career goal against Catoctin. That season, she started out as a reserve, backing up older players. She was starting by the end of her freshman year.

"Eventually, it got to a point where I had to (start her), she was that good," Wetzel said. "But she accepted the role and came off the bench."

Beck knew it sounded clich?, but said she's always been a team-oriented player. In fact, when asked about favorite goals during her career, she mentioned one scored by Lions teammate Amy Bishop last season.

"It beat North Hagerstown," Beck said. "We had never beaten them. It was just good to get that."

Of course, Beck's scored clutch goals, too, like the one in overtime that gave the Lions a win over Century. She also sets up teammates.

Before getting the career goals record, Beck broke Walkersville 's career and season assist marks as a sophomore last season. Those assists resulted from her uncanny ability to produce well-placed free kicks and corner kicks. She worked with her father over the summer, trying to make her kicks even better.

Naturally, a player of her caliber is usually marked each match. Still, Beck is once again among the area's top scorers this season, demonstrating the same kind of determination that she used to earn those pair of red adidas cleats.

"I've known her for years and knew the kind of player she could be," Wetzel said. "She's a competitor. Just her drive."
