Tuscarora's Maddy Borek, left, moves toward the goal as she is defended by Frederick's Jordyn Miller in the second half of the Titans' 2-0 playoff win at Linganore High School Tuesday evening.
New Market -- The last-minute change of venue didn't bother the Tuscarora's field hockey team in Tuesday's Class 3A West playoff opener with city rival Frederick .

The Titans beat the Cadets 2-0 to move on in the playoffs.

Tuesday's game was moved to Linganore High School because of bad weather. The artificial surface at Linganore allowed officials to play the game even with the rain.

Tuscarora's game was one of three local playoff contests shifted to schools with artificial surfaces because of bad weather. Linganore 's road playoff game with Damascus (3A West) was shifted back to Linganore .

Middletown 's road playoff game at Liberty (2A West) was moved to Middletown .

Linganore defeated Damascus on Tuesday and plays at Clarksburg in Thursday's 3A quarterfinals.

With the change in location, Tuscarora coach Julie Lunn told her team it was important to score as soon as possible and contain Frederick with a strong defense. The Titans did both, advancing to a 6 p.m. Thursday quarterfinal encounter with top-seeded Quince Orchard.

"We looked at each other in the huddle before the game and I said, 'Leave everything on the field,'" Lunn said. "'Go 110 percent the entire way.'"

Frederick coach Valerie Wittkamper said some of her players attended field hockey camp that was held on an artificial surface at Penn State over the summer.

"It's a much faster game and they like it," Wittkamper said. "It's more wide open."

As instructed, the Titans set the tone quickly. With 20 minutes, 44 seconds left in the first half, Sandy Marin scored an unassisted goal off a penalty corner.

A minute later, on a play close to Frederick 's goal, Maddy Borek took a pass from Kiersten Bumgardner and shot the ball into the back of the cage for a 2-0 lead. Even with a commanding lead, the Titans (5-7) needed their defense to keep Frederick (1-13) in check.

That job went to goalie Emily Valin and back Tara Woodward. Behind seven saves, Valin anchored the extreme back of the Titans' defensive third.

"To watch my team score those two goals was just fantastic," Valin said. "It was my job to keep them from scoring. To put all of that together was just fantastic. It's something we've worked on very hard in practice."

Woodward's job involved communicating with other teammates, directing them to different areas of the defensive third as Frederick advanced the ball.

"They were keeping a few players back (on offense) so we had to adjust to that," Woodward said. "They brought the ball up the sidelines pretty well so we had to do our best to contain it."

"We just pressed and pressed and pressed," Wittkamper said. "It's been the same challenge we've had all season. When you get the ball down there, put it in the cage. We've had trouble with that."

O'Boyle had 11 saves for Frederick .

"She did a marvelous job," Wittkamper said.
