Coming up is the most important weekend of cross country in Frederick County. We have the county championship this Saturday at Catoctin High School. We have some very good runners and teams squaring off for county bragging rights this year.
Unlike years past, there is not really a clear-cut favorite on the boy’s side when it comes to team champions.
Walkersville and Linganore are both really solid teams with a good group of varsity runners. Linganore is lead by Braden Bruning while Walkersville is lead by Stephen Keith. Each runner has a strong supporting cast that will undoubtedly have a lot of runners towards the top as they battle for the team title. Both Coach Wright and Coach Wilhelm would like nothing more than to start the post-season with a county championship win.
Neither of those teams should forget about Urbana though.
They have perhaps the individual favorite in Jimmy Miller. The defending county champion would very much like to lead his team to a team championship after TJ broke their streak last year. Miller has only lost to one other county runner this year and that was Bruning at the Frank Keyser Invite. Those two will likely battle for the individual championship but should not forget about Keith.
Other runners to watch for on the boy’s side include: Adam Rudy (Linganore), Tyree Smith (Tuscarora), Stewart Reich (TJ), Christian Blackner (Walkersville), Logan Jones (Tuscarora), Patrick Duboyce (Linganore), George Martinez (Frederick), and Josh Allwardt (Urbana).
There does not appear to be as much drama on the girl’s side though. TJ’s girls are very dominant this year and are clearly the cream of the crop when it comes to the team championship.
Stephanie Bryan is the favorite for a county championship but if the past is any indication the favorite doesn’t always win for the girls. Becky Kaler (Brunswick), Bridget Nolan (Linganore), and Kayla Coleman (Urbana) would love to play spoiler. Stephanie’s toughest competition though may come from her own teammates in Savanna Plombon and Kristen Luttrell.
Catoctin’s course is a great cross country course that will guarantee that the most complete cross country runner comes out on top. There are hills, technical trails, and open field running. The first race kicks off at 10 a.m. on Saturday. Brave the weather and come out, you won’t be disappointed. Besides the weather can’t be any worse than last year.
