The ground is soggy and wet and the wind is bitter and cold. The sky has been dark and dreary. The creek at Woodsboro Park is flooding. However, the creek is not the only thing flooding.
Our team has been flooded with a mix of emotion. Nervous, yet excited. The postseason begins this Saturday at Catoctin High School. As a team, we really hope its not as wet and rainy as it was at Kemptown Park last year. This past week, the weather has been bleak and doesn’t look very bright for Saturday. But like Bill Bowerman, legendary Oregon and Olympic coach, once said “ There’s no such thing as bad weather, just soft people.”
Bad weather or good weather, Walkersville Boys cross country is showing that it's willing to compete.
This past weekend we participated in the Middletown Relays. We have never competed in a relay meet, so it was something new and interesting.
We had two teams competiing. A varsity “A” and “B” team running in two separate races. The combination of the two times determined the overall winner.
Each runner ran two kilometers instead of the usual five. As most teams ran their top 5 in varsity “A” and next 5 in varsity “B“. We decided to mix it up a little bit by spreading our varsity runners across both teams.
Our varsity “B” won their race by a minute and ten seconds. With most of our members running by themselves, Zach Zeller ran an impressive 6:29. In the Varsity “A” (2nd) race, we fell into a bit of a gap. Starting the race, we could afford to lose to Urbana by a minute and nine seconds and still win overall.
As I was about to grab the baton from one of our impressive new runners, Patrick Simons for the final leg, I was told that our lead in the overall standing had drastically been cut. As I came around the final turn, Christian Blackner came sprinting down the hill yelling at me that I needed to go hard or else a first place finish would not occur. I ran a decent time of 6:25. We had a little more cushion than Christian indicated and were able to hold off Urbana for the win.
This was a good tune up meet before counties. We are looking to improve on our finish from last year. Ill see you this Saturday at Catoctin High School ... rain or shine!
