Amanda Fernandez: Volleyball
Why do we play?
Originally published November 02, 2009

Today, in practice, our coach asked us why we were not having any fun when we were playing.

Then she asked us why we played and why we tried-out for the sport. While she was talking, I started to think of an answer, but not just an answer, I wanted to give her the correct answer. And then I realized there was no correct answer for those questions.

As I thought about it, I also started to see and notice things the way coach sees them. And to be truthful, I saw a team that had great talent and potential, but for some reason we weren’t playing up to it.

And then I remembered the second question, why were we here? I didn’t know how to answer her, or if she was even looking for an answer, but I wanted one.

I thought about why I was playing before I even focused on everyone else on the court. After thinking about it, I finally found my answer. v I was there because I love the game, because the day of the try-outs I couldn’t wait to get started. I knew I was playing volleyball because I love the feeling I get when I just made a good pass or a great kill, and the rush of adrenaline you receive while you’re playing. I also love what it feels like to be part of a team, to be part of this team. And I know that this is how the rest of the team feels too.

If you play a sport it’s probably because you enjoy it; but there is more to it. And I think that was what our coach was trying to get us to see. So if you’re playing any sport think about why you are playing and it might surprise you in a good way.

The Lady Cadets have been on a winning streak for the past four games, and everyone is excited to end the season on a good note. Soon the Lady Cadets will play Urbana High School again. Let’s keep up the good work.
