Hood made the NCAA Division III Men's Basketball Tournament for the first time in team history (Feb. 28)

Sam Perlozzo fired as Orioles manager (June 18)

Sam Perlozzo was fired by the Orioles on June 18, the result of his inability to bring last-place Baltimore out of a lengthy funk culminated by an eight-game losing streak.

Barry Bonds becomes baseball's career home runs leader, passing Hank Aaron (Aug. 7)

Barry Bonds — 21 home runs from Hank Aaron’s all-time record at the beginning of this season, is, after 21 years, one up on The Hammer.

The Baltimore Orioles lost 30-3 to the Texas Rangers. The 30 runs set American League and modern MLB records and was the highest run total since the Chicago Colts scored 36 against the Louisville Colonels in 1897 (Aug .22)

Despite having an overall losing record, the Frederick Keys won the Carolina League title for the second time in three years (Sept. 12)

The odds were against the Keys, but somehow they managed to pull it off.

Middletown's Alex Hoffman won the state golf title - the first Frederick County individual golfer to accomplish that feat since 1998 (Oct. 25)

Hoffman won thanks in part to two missed playoff putts by counterpart Brandon Powers of Bel Air. Even so, Hoffman said, "I was playing to win."

Urbana's girls soccer team won its first-ever state title (Nov. 15)

The Hawks capped their remarkable season at 12-3-1 and erased any lingering memories of painful losses in the state final in 2003 and the state semifinals in 1996 and 2001.

Washington Redskins safety Sean Taylor dies after being shot in his home by an intruder (Nov. 27)

"We're going to miss him," Redskins coach Joe Gibbs said. "I'm not talking about as a player. I'm talking about as a person."

Damascus' football team wins a state title (Dec. 6)

The win marks the first state title for Damascus since it won the state Class 4A championship in 2005. The Hornets finished the season 13-1.

Middletown athlete Colleen McCarrick was a finalist for the Wendy's High School Heisman Trophy award (Dec. 8)

McCarrick was one of the 12 national finalists for the 2007 Wendy's High School Heisman Award.
