Wonder 1: Today the Hessian Barracks represent by far the most important military establishment surviving in North America from the time of the American Revolution. Numbering among the largest buildings then in the New World, the Barracks, strategically located on the western frontier of the new nation, served to check the British Army and its Indian allies. At the same time, the 1,500 German soldiers imprisoned here made substantial contributions in cash, labor, and talent to the further development of the local economy. Then too, many old Frederick families can trace their roots directly to these occupants. Now, after 231 years of service, the Barracks remain an priceless, tangible reminder of these beginnings. They reflect, in short, what we are as a community.
