Wonder 1: The Clustered Spires. They have long symbolized to approaching residents and visitors to Frederick that they were arriving at this destination. I used to be able to see the clustered spires from Rt. 15, but then structures were built, trees grew, and they are barely visible to me anymore. They are the foundation of the town of Frederick, though.
Wonder 2: Cunningham Falls. A beautiful natural waterfall in the mountains of northern Frederick County, they have long been a destination of tourists and county residents as a form of refuge and recreation. To have climbed "the falls" is also a special privilege.
Wonder 3: The Carillon in Baker Park. There are very few carillons in the world, and one of the few exists in our very own Baker Park. Another place it is a privilege to have climbed to the top of, though very scary for those afraid of heights. We are also privileged to have some wonderful carillon players come to Baker Park over the years to perform Sunday afternoon concerts that echo through the park.
Wonder 4: The covered bridges that still exist in the county. There aren't many left, but Frederick can boast a few that people will come from far away to visit. They are such quaint testaments to the rural heritage and slower life that is nearly a thing of the past in the Frederick area.
Wonder 5: Schifferstadt -- Frederick is a town that preserves its heritage as much as it is capable of doing. I've seen towns tear down the old original founders'houses to make way for shopping centers and newer housing developments. Frederick has managed to preserve one of its first houses and to make a monument and museum of it among the hustle and bustle of Rt. 15 and Rosemont Avenue.
Wonder 6: The Monocacy River and the historic land it runs through -- It is a wonder in itself to see how the Monocacy River floods onto the farmer's fields when heavy rains come and snow melts. It is also a spectacular thing that this river has seen much history along its banks. Perhaps the county will one day offer guided canoe trips along this "scenic" river?
Wonder 7: The Overlooks at Gambrill State Park -- What a spectacular thing to go to this part of the mountain range that runs through Frederick and see both the Middletown and Frederick valleys below. It is breathtaking, though the growth of housing developments over the years have taken away from the beautiful multicolored tapestry of farm fields of 20 years ago.
