Ulysses Grant Bourne was born in Calvert County March 17, 1873, the ninth of 10 children.
He attended Leonard Medical College in Raleigh, N.C., and after receiving his license to practice in Maryland, moved to Frederick.
Because he was black, he was not permitted to practice at Frederick Memorial Hospital, but he set up his practice at the corner of West All Saints and Ice streets, accepting both white and black patients.
While in Frederick, Bourne helped establish the local chapter of the NAACP and the Maryland Negro Medical Society. In 1919, he and another doctor founded a hospital on West All Saints Street, the only hospital serving blacks at the time.
Bourne also ventured into the public eye, becoming the first black man from western Maryland to run for a seat in the House of Delegates, and served as the regional vice president of the sixth Republican district.
He also tackled segregation on the cultural front. When he and some friends were not permitted to enter the front door of the only opera house in Frederick, they opened their own.
Bourne retired in 1953 and died three years later, but his children carried on his love of medicine.
His son, Ulysses Grant Bourne Jr., became the first black doctor to have privileges at Frederick Memorial Hospital in 1961. His daughter Blanche was a pediatrician and public health administrator for 40 years. His daughter Grace was a nurse.
