Driving school opens new location

Judging time and space is often a challenge for new drivers, according to Rusty and Mary Moore of Greg's Driving School.

The business has opened a new location at 3508 Worthington Blvd., Suite 201, in Urbana.

The couple, both certified driving instructors, said it is often difficult for a learning driver to judge the speed of an oncoming vehicle while making a left-hand turn.

Students often don't look far enough ahead to prepare for upcoming turns, pedestrians and work zones, they said.

"Driver's education is very serious," Mary said. "It is a collaboration between the driving school, student and parent. We impress upon our students what a privilege it is to have a license; it is not their right and can be taken away for many different reasons."

She said the instructors want all students to make good decisions when on the road.

"We can teach the mechanics of driving a car to an individual of any age, but we can't teach them to have a mature attitude when they get behind the wheel," Mary said.

Students get a 36-hour program, which is required to obtain a license in Maryland. The program consists of 30 hours of classroom instruction and six hours of in-car experience.

The Moores said they had been servicing students in Urbana since 2002 from their offices in Rose Hill Plaza in Frederick and Mount Airy. They have a total of 15 certified driving instructors.

In Urbana, classes are Monday through Friday for two weeks, scheduled individually with students from 3 to 6:15 p.m. and 6:30 to 9:45 p.m.

Greg's Driving School also offers the Driver Improvement Program and Point System Conference. Individuals who obtain traffic violations, especially teenagers who are ticketed within the first 18 months of getting a license, are required by the Motor Vehicle Administration to take the program, which is offered on Saturdays. The programs are offered online for individuals over the age of 18.
