At a well-attended meeting of the Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals at Federated Charities headquarters last night, a resolution was passed requesting the Mayor and Aldermen to send dogs picked up on the streets, to the shelter provided by the society until they can be humanely put out of the way. This action was taken by the society following a statement by Mayor Fraley to the effect that he had received a request for stray dogs for gas experimental purposes.

WASHINGTON — Earl Warren has resigned as chief justice of the United States, authoritative sources reported today. The big Californian was named to the top post on the Supreme Court in 1953 by President Dwight D. Eisenhower. At 77, he is known to have long felt it was time to step aside.

Summer officially begins about Frederick County today, and the season didn’t live up to its typical image as temperatures dropped this morning to the lowest mark since May 28. Summer officially begins about 4 p.m. today, and is probably waiting until afternoon to get warmed up from the 48 degree temperature that descended on the county early today.
