One of the most fun things to watch over the last five years in Frederick’s music community has been the evolution of Jack Funk.

Consistently filling a void in Frederick’s jam band niche, they’ve undergone lineup changes to emerge as a group that understands the value in not breaking up, which is more than half the battle.

That commitment has paid dividends over the years and “Puppet Mistress” is no exception. Off the band’s brand-spanking-new EP, this five-and-a-half-minute track provides some seriously funky riffage led by Nick Ring and lead guitarist Ryan Buell, one of this area’s best-kept musical secrets. Throw in Ring’s scruffy, Dave Matthews-esque vocals and this song alone makes the band’s new EP worth checking out. It’s one of the silkiest jams of the year, slithering like a snake through a forest of funk. More, please.
