Welcome to February, where romance reigns supreme, the Super Bowl serves as a conduit for connecting people and, of course, the Oscars. Yes. That’s it.
This year’s February also marks the first time in six years that a Frederick Music Showcase won’t be going down at the Weinberg Center, and that’s sad. What’s happy, though, is that Frederick has a pretty (pretty, pretty) good slate of music to welcome in the second month of the year.
Leading the way will be The Band With My Favorite Song of 2019, daMOOD. They will be taking the Smoketown Creekside stage at 7:30 p.m. Friday. Now, not only has Smoketown quickly become one of the leading hosts of music in town (which means it behooves you to at least give it a quick looksie to see what all the fuss is about), but daMOOD tells me that they are hard at work on new material.
What does that mean? Well, it means you can probably expect to hear a song or two you might not have heard before from them. Or, well, you could just crash their practice every now and then like I do, but that might get you punched in the face. Either way, it promises to be quite the memorable show and five bucks will get you in the door.
Oh, wait. You thought that was it? No way, dude.
Because also on Friday, Olde Mother Brewing, also quickly becoming one of the leading hosts of music in town, is going to throw a show, and on that show will be four fabulous bands. Those bands? Weed Coughin, Cavern, Foghound and Crooked Hills. And, serendipitously, I have it on good authority that the latter of the four bands is also hard at work on new material. In fact, from what I understand, they’re currently in the studio with the hope of releasing something before the end of the year.
Whew. That was a lot. The rock and the roll begins at 6:30 p.m. and no, you don’t have to worry about a cover, either.
The other highlighted heavy show of the week comes in the form of Degrader and Deadculture — with Noxious, My Favorite Deputy and Here To Rot — who will plug into the Cafe 611 walls for some raucousness that nobody will soon forget. Better yet? This is going down tonight. The all ages show will kick off at 7 p.m. and tickets run you $12 at the door.
And finally, as we did last week, let’s give it up for some cover bands. First up is Champion Billiards, who will host music both Friday and Saturday. The former will feature the Catholic School Dropouts while the latter will welcome in local favorites The Few. Both shows begin at 10 p.m. and both will run you $5.
For those looking to stay downtown, however, the JoJo’s stage will play home to Unfiltered, who, to close the circle, once performed at a Frederick Music Showcase afterparty at JoJo’s. And then there’s Bushwaller’s who will host Shag on Friday and the JJ Billings Band on Saturday. Both shows begin at 10 p.m. and both are sure to be packed.
Now, did I miss anything? Of course I did. So, if you’d like to be included in next week’s roundup, email firstname.lastname@example.org. In the meantime (and in between time), don’t forget to place those prop bets before the Super Bowl kicks off this week. Always take the over on the National Anthem. Always take the over.
Be safe. Be well.
