The cover for Silent Old Mtns. latest song, “People.”

Eight-and-a-half years on and Silent Old Mtns. have somehow survived hiatuses, tours and side projects to bring a brand new song to the masses, “People,” from their as-yet-untitled upcoming album. It marks the return of one of Frederick’s most beloved acts and it showcases a band that has clearly honed its sound since we last heard from them.

Sure, singer Andrew Bromhal’s gauzy vocals are still there, and yeah, Joe Jalette’s signature guitar sound is present in spades, but what truly shines through is the maturity that has occurred after nearly a decade. Reminiscent of Coldplay’s “X&Y” era, the band’s reintroduction is a love letter to pop music, even if the song runs about five-and-a-half minutes.

No matter. Because as Bromhal plays on the word “back” for multiple stanzas, it’ll be a tough task to get his assertions out of your head once you hear them. Throw in a key falsetto and there’s only one question left to answer: When’s the full-length coming?
