Kenneth Allan and Mary Jane (Day) Walter, of Gaithersburg, recently celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary and they both turn 80 years old in October. They were married on Aug. 3, 1956, at Bethesda United Methodist Church in Browningsville.

First meeting in the fifth grade at Damascus Elementary School, Allan and Mary Jane graduated from Damascus High School (1954) where Allan later returned as a teacher near the end of his Montgomery County Public Schools’ career. Mary Jane also retired from a career in MCPS after raising their three children: son Bryan, who was killed at age 15 by a drunk driver while mowing a lawn in Damascus after school;, daughter Alice, and son Bruce.

Allan and Mary Jane are long-time members of Wesley Grove United Methodist Church, in Woodfield, serving in many capacities over the years. They have been honored by supportive and caring Wesley Grove members as Man of the Year and Woman of the Year.

The Walter’s enjoyed a three-day celebration hosted by their children in Southern Maryland. In attendance were spouses and friends along with four generations of family including five grandchildren and three great-grandchildren. Festivities included a luncheon at the Front Porch Restaurant, swimming, boating and crab feasting.

Thankful for their many blessings of family and friends, Allan and Mary Jane are also grateful they had the opportunity to cruise with long-time friends and to visit many national parks (including each state in “the lower 48”) in their camper-van. Currently, they take shorter trips visiting family and joining friends on Damascus Travel Club trips.
