Engineering scholarships awarded

The 2019 annual Roy E. Jorgensen Memorial Scholarship Award for civil engineering was presented Oct. 23 by the engineering and facilities services firm Roy Jorgensen Associates Inc. in Buckeystown. Kailee Unangst, center, pursuing an MA degree in civil engineering at the Georgia Institute of Technology, was honored with the full annual scholarship in the amount of $15,000. Pictured with her is John Jorgensen Sr., left, and John Jorgensen Jr., right. The scholarship is awarded each year to a qualifying civil engineering senior or graduate student by the Maryland-based engineering and facilities services firm. Roy E. Jorgensen was a degreed civil engineer graduate of the University of California at Berkeley and a licensed professional engineer. He founded Roy Jorgensen Associates Inc., a specialized highway management consulting firm, in 1961. The firm has grown to a staff of over 700 and has expanded the management techniques applied to the highway industry to other sectors, including the maintenance management of toll roads, building facilities, and port facilities for both private and public owners in the U.S. and internationally. With his passing in 2004, the board of directors established a memorial scholarship foundation to honor his outstanding career and to continue his commitment to supporting the academic goals of young men and women in the engineering field. The scholarship award, made each year in August, is based upon an evaluation of the qualifying applications submitted. Interested students may request scholarship award criteria and an application by e-mail addressed to john_jorgensen@royjorgensen.com.
