Scholarship recipients

The Mount Pleasant Ruritan Club recently awarded five scholarships. Four of the scholarship recipients are picture, from left to right: Zachary Crum, Devon Brunner, Carolina Heister and Hailey Carr. Rachel Eaves also received a scholarship.

The Mount Pleasant Ruritan Club on Crum Road awarded five scholarships at their May general membership meeting. Following are the students, four of whom were present and their college plans:

Zachary Crum is a student at Frederick Community College and a graduate of Walkersville High School, Class pf 2020. Zachary is majoring in health and exercise science, earning a 4.0 in his first semester at FCC. He plans to transfer to a four-year college next year and continue his education toward a health-related career, such as an orthopedic physician assistant.

Devon Brunner graduated from Walkersville High School this year and has been accepted at Virginia Tech in Blacksburg, Virginia, where he plans to major in ocean engineering while being part of the NROTC program. Upon graduation, Devon plans to commission to the U.S. Navy an become a naval aviator. He was in several academic honor societies as well as being captain of the varsity football team.

Carolina Heister, graduating from LHS this year, will enter Kent State University in Ohio in the fall. Her area of study is fashion merchandising. Carolina is praised by her teachers for her extraordinary work ethic, for her work with fellow students, and for creating the school Fashion Club. While holding down a job, and tutoring elementary age children, she was able to maintain excellent grades throughout high school.

Hailey Carr graduated from Linganore High School this school year. She has been accepted at Shenandoah University in Winchester, Virginia, where she will pursue a degree in exercise science and pre-physical therapy. Hailey, as an avid softball player, experienced the need for physical therapy herself. She immersed herself in the field by doing unpaid internships at rehab facilities in the area. She also enhanced her knowledge at the physical rehabilitation program at the CTC Center. Through all this, Haley maintained straight A’s throughout high school.

Rachel Eaves is in her second year at Messiah College in Mechanicsburg, Pennsylvania, majoring in social work with a minor in youth ministry. Rachel was a 2020 graduate of Linganore High School., where she was an active participant and officer in several organizations. Rachel hopes someday to do crisis intervention with children. Rachel is looking forward to her sophomore year field experience placement at a rural school district in Central Pennsylvania.

Each year, beginning Feb. 1, the Ruritan Club announces that scholarships are available to Walkersville and Linganore current and past students, and club members and their families. Those interested can call 301-898-5588 for more information.
