Scholarship recipients

The Frederick Steeplechasers Running Club recently presented scholarships to two area high school seniors. The Frederick Steeplechasers Running Club recently awarded the 2016 FSRC Memorial Scholarship to Anna Hartman, Oakdale High School, and Blake Capella, Walkersville High School.

These two student athletes are the inaugural winners of the scholarship, started this year in honor of long-time club member Larry Key who died while running in August 2015. Going forward, the scholarship will honor Key and other designated Steeplechasers, including Rick O’Donnell, who lost his battle with cancer in 2013. The scholarship will be funded by the proceeds of one of the four FSRC signature races, Rick’s Run, to be held this year on Sept. 18.

Bonnie Key, sister of Larry Key, presented the scholarship to Capella at the awards ceremony at Walkersville High School on June 1. On the same day, Mike O’Grady, chairman of the FSRC Scholarship committee, presented Hartman with the scholarship at the Oakdale High School awards ceremony.

The FSRC Memorial Scholarship, worth $2,500 for each recipient in 2016, recognizes a male and female high school senior who embodies the character, integrity and service to the running community of the Steeplechaser members to whom the scholarship is dedicated.

In keeping with her brother’s legacy of service, Bonnie Key offered that this year’s recipients have a record of service to the running community, including hours given to help others achieve goals.

Hartman plans to attend UMBC Honor College in Baltimore, pursuing global studies. Capella heads to the College of New Jersey in the Bonner Scholars Program studying computer engineering.
