Log Out

Protesters at the board of education offices wave signs last week calling for students to log out from virtual classes this coming Tuesday.

Following some in-person protests outside of Frederick County Board of Education meetings in recent weeks, some parents of Frederick County Public Schools students have planned an all-day logout protest that is scheduled to take place on Tuesday.

Sarah Steinberg, a mother of four FCPS students and one homeschooled student, is one of the lead organizers of Tuesday’s planned protest. She and other parents are hoping to show strength in numbers and show the school system and the board of education how many families are unhappy with virtual learning.

The protest in execution is simple, Steinberg said.

“[Students] will just simply not go to school that day. They will not go for their meetings, they will not go into Schoology,” she said.

Families who choose to participate in the protest are being encouraged to contact their school’s attendance office ahead of time and give notice that their child will be using one of five allotted vacation days that are given to students. This way, student absences will be excused, according to Steinberg, and they will be allowed to make up missed work.

In an email, School Superintendent Terry Alban said she respects the rights of parents to voice their concerns.

When asked how the school system plans to handle what could be a large number of students being absent that day, Alban said teachers will move forward with planned lessons and that learning will continue for students who do attend school.

“While using the virtual model, we have modified our attendance taking procedures and will continue to apply those procedures,” Alban said. “Anytime a student is absent, they have access to missed instruction and opportunities to make-up the work missed.”

She added that the instructional impact such a protest could have will differ for individual students.

Board Vice President Jay Mason, who voted against moving to the hybrid model, said in an email that he understands the impact virtual learning is having on students and families as a parent of three FCPS students himself.

“We are deeply committed to the mental and physical health and safety of our students and staff. I am in continuous discussions to develop a solution to ensure that when we return to the classroom, it can be done as safe as possible,” Mason said. “I understand there are many viewpoints on this topic and everyone has the right to express those views.”

Steinberg and other parents are members of a few different Facebook groups that all call for a return to in-person learning. The online groups are filled with stories, pictures and videos of students who are struggling with virtual learning.

To some, it may seem counterproductive to pull a student out of school for a day when they are already struggling, but Steinberg said it’s a small sacrifice for the greater good. If it helps to get parents’ voices heard, then in the end, it will have been worth it, she said.

“If logging out for one day helps the [board] see how much we need to be in school, that little extra effort it may take on the part of students and parents to catch up that evening will be well worth it,” Steinberg said. “It is no different than parents taking a day off from work to attend a protest/rally.”

She also pointed to times in history when students would walk out of schools or stage sit-ins to make their voices heard.

“We need the board to know we aren’t going away and that we will continue to fight for our students,” Steinberg said, and added that there are already many students who don’t log on regularly due to lack of WiFi, homelessness and other factors.

“We are standing with them to help get that very high-risk group back to school. These are the forgotten kids no one is talking about,” she said.

Steinberg said her three oldest children were handling the virtual learning model well and had good grades, but for her, it’s not about the grades.

“Some people might be like, ‘Oh, why are you complaining?’ I’m complaining and upset because it is not what learning should look like and they are not being challenged in a way that will further their advancement in academics,” Steinberg said.

She and other parents also feel like the board is not listening to their desires and pointed to recent survey results that were released by FCPS. The surveys, which were conducted in July and received responses from approximately 20,000 parents, showed 67 percent said they would opt for a hybrid learning model if the school system moved in that direction.

“It seems like [the board is] always focusing on the people that don’t want to [go back] when there’s more people that want to go back to school,” Steinberg said.

While she is happy to phase into a hybrid model for the time being, Steinberg said she would ultimately like to see a return to full in-person learning. There are flaws with the hybrid model, Steinberg said, and she feels like it would put more of a workload on teachers.

She and others understand that some families may still feel more comfortable staying at home and learning virtually. For those that do want to return to in-person learning, they know there is a risk, Steinberg said. She suggested having families who send their children back to school sign waivers acknowledging that their child could get sick.

When asked if she is concerned that a return to school could cause an outbreak or the death of a student or staff member, Steinberg said she is concerned, but that it’s not realistic to live life in fear.

“Everything that we do in life is risky...there may be that rare case, unfortunately and very sad that a child could pass away, but that could happen in a number of situations in everyday life,” she said.

Steinberg added that she is aware of how serious the coronavirus can be and is not trying to downplay it, but she feels life can continue if everyone plays their part in being responsible and adhering to measures like mask wearing and social distancing.

“I really am sensitive to everybody that’s lost somebody and everybody who maybe is dealing with side effects from the coronavirus. I know it’s serious and I take it seriously myself,” she said. “There are ways to keep us safe and continue on.”

I get it. Having five school-aged children is difficult. That is why I do not have five children. Maybe y'all should have thought this through rather than creating a problem and then making others pay for your difficulty solving that problem.

HappySeller2014

Brutually honest statements, but so true. My wife and I take full responsibility for the safety, nuturing and education of the children we had. Complaining about others regarding the lot of the lives of your children is simply a smokescreen covering up inadequacies in parenting. We are not raising our children to be quitters.

...and the wave of new cases is here...10+ states with highest infections to-date...more starting the climb. Trump says "Biden will follow the science"....so...that's fine by me vs a guy who has no clue whatsoever....and in Wisconsin, there are only 20 ICU beds left in the state as of this morning. Do we really want that here? You go get your own kids and yourself sick and i hope the insurance companies cancel you for being stupid too for the negligence in cramming people back together now.

Pretty much. I am wondering where the "Personal Responsibility" crowd is now?

They went out with the “Super Patriot” crowd because they’re the same crowd.

Question for Mrs Steinberg and those supporting this. How many deaths of children and FCPS employees is it worth? How many hospitalizations are you willing to accept? Ten? Twenty? Fifty? Your own child/brother/sister/parent? What is your bar?

HappySeller2014

Good questions. But you will never get answers. Folks like this do not think things out more than 2" in front of their noses, which is why, like lemmings, they keep Darwinism alive and well.

Jthomas515

This is very true. It’s one sided.

“It seems like [the board is] always focusing on the people that don’t want to [go back] when there’s more people that want to go back to school,” Steinberg said.

Greg F

J...more, as in you? Nationwide, the most people polled say no way Jose.

Interesting. Bosco is asked a question, which he gives a truthful answer to, and fido, along with his LLBTT (Liberal Left Bull Tag Team,) attacks him because he doesn't give an answer they like. PurplePicklesP/Snowflake even goes so far as to, essentially, call bosco a liar. These 'people' are perfect examples of just how low the liberal Left has allowed itself to go. They spew their hatred for everything they don't like everyday, and still have the gall to say that the Right is hateful. Hell, the other day some of the "peaceful protesters" they admire so much went so far as to pulled down a statue of Lincoln; what the f was that all about??? No, the liberal Left has spent too much time the last four years shooting itself in the foot trying to overturn Trump's victory over Clinton that they failed to see the damage they've done to their own, now-split-wide-open Party. And fido and his faithful followers are living proof of that, their desperation over Trump's reelection shows in just about every comment they post . Anyhow, as Matts853 likes to say, "The cult is out in force today! Enjoy yourselves." [lol][lol][lol]

Thank you for proving my point again, you and hay never let me down in that respect.

Just curious, please show me where I called bosco a liar. If pointing out information that disputes a comment or provides a factual take, then I guess I'll own that. Otherwise, please don't try to generalize my responses or put words in my mouth.

C.D.Reid

Ok hay, where did I post that you called bosco a liar?

Hayduke2

Read your post again.

C.D.Reid

I did hay, before I posted my reply to you at 9:11 am. So, once again, where did I post that you called bosco a liar?

Pro-Choice/Privileged W. Woman

@Butch

Could you also point out where exactly I called bosco/Eric Trump a liar in my post while you are at it? Thanks Butch. [huh][huh][huh]

C.D.Reid

@Snowflake

I said that you ESSENTIALLY called bosco a liar, Snowflake. Do you know what that word means, or shall I wait while you look it up? And I said it because of your comment "Bosco/Eric Trump can type anything he thinks you want to hear in this little comment box and knows you have no way to prove him right or wrong." Got it now?

Hayduke2

You posted " PurplePicklesP/Snowflake even goes so far as to, essentially, call bosco a liar. These 'people' are perfect examples of just how low the liberal Left has allowed itself to go. " Then you proceed to mention me in the very next post. Pretty clear to me CD....

NewMarketParent

@PurplePickles

In the quote of the great philosopher, Forest Gump, "Stupid is as stupid does". I would like to extend that to "Lying is what a liar does". If you lie by omission, it is still a lie. If you lie by distorting facts (aka lying by omission), it is still a lie.

C.D.Reid

Ok hay, and where in that very next post did I say you called bosco a liar? Hmmm?

Hayduke2

Playing sematics - you ESSENTIALLY included me in a response where you say I proved your point ( actually, no point was made ) - regardless of your inability to reply or accept a literal interpretation, I hope you step away from your computer and enjoy a fantastic day, brought to you by nature.

@Butch

Oh and I like my new name Snowflake because no two snowflakes are the same, I'm unique, and snowflakes are stunningly beautiful, so thank you for my new name. Did you notice my new name ?

This is the definition of essentially:

Definition of essentially

: in essence : FUNDAMENTALLY —used to identify or stress the basic or essential character or nature of a person or thing or to say that a description is basically true or accurate.

Basically would have been a better word to use instead of essentially because basically means this:

Definition of basically

1a: at a basic level : in fundamental disposition or nature

basically correct

basically, they are simple people

And to clarify for you Butch, NO WAIT, I just now understood why you thought I was calling Eric Trump a liar. Because you believe everything that anyone types in the comment box.

I don't so..how many times have you been scammed Butch?

I said there was no way to prove what Eric Trump was saying as a lie or the truth because there isn't a way, is there, to prove what anyone says in the comment box as being the truth or a lie.

So Butch the next time a Nigerian Prince contacts you how much money do you intend on giving him? You just said you believe whatever anyone says in the comment boxes so I just going to assume you will be donating money to the Prince because you just said you believe whatever anyone tells you, and you are a Trump supporter so there's that......

C.D.Reid

No hay, once again you are wrong. I did not "essentially" include you in a response where I said you proved my point, I definitely included you in that reply. And nowhere in it did I imply that you called bosco a liar. You're simply trying to read something into my comment that just wasn't there. The point that you, and your buddies, keep making for me is the same one that I've been saying for weeks now, which is that nothing of any worthwhile, intelligent sustenance is ever included in the comments posted here by the liberal left. Understand now?

Hayduke2

Alternate reality bro!!!!!

C.D.Reid

Hay, you try to read something into a comment of mine that's simply not there and then, after I explain my point to you, you accuse me of "alternate reality?" Another nice attempt at deflecting away from your own false illusions. I suggest you try reading comments comprehensively before writing and posting. You just might save yourself from future embarrassment.

Snowflake:

"A hypersensitive, irrational person who can't stand to have their world views challenged, or be offended in any perceived or even slightest of ways; they will have any number of emotional reactions: impuning character and/or motives, blocking on social media, shouting, interrupting, threatening, assaulting, etc. They often live in an echo chamber of their own beliefs and surround themselves exclusively with people and opinions that agree with their own. This term is most often use to describe left-leaning people."

Your post was absolutely perfect Mr. Sniper, thank you.

MrSniper

In a perfect world, I too would prefer to send my child to in person classes. Unfortunately, this is the real world & my first priority is to protect my child from harm. That means virtual instruction until infection numbers are so low that the chances would be remote that an outbreak will occur that could cause an infection or a vaccine becomes available. I take solace in knowing that, like most things, this too shall pass. Maybe the virtual learning will continue for the rest of this school year. Then when the vaccine becomes available, I can shift my worries to the normal concerns that parents have about sending their kids to school, like grades & extracurricular activities. Anyways, to the parents who want in person instruction now, we hear you. We just don’t agree with you.

Dunning-Kruger always around.

newspostreader

It starts with the parents. If the parents aren't supportive then the kids aren't going to support it. Parents need to be aware of the image they portray to their children. In this case, those parents are saying it's okay to just quit when it gets tough. Great parenting skills.

Hayduke2

Newspost- 👍. Most teachers I know are working their behinds off to try to make the best of a situation they didn’t create.

sevenstones1000

What is criminal is that we have no guidance and assistance from the President and his administration. No leadership - each state is left to reinvent the wheel as they are driving the car. Teachers are doing the best they can.

I’m betting these parents are all anti-vaxxer, too. They seem the type.

EZRider

"no guidance and assistance from the President and his administration"....there has been plenty of guidance from the CDC - some of it changing as knowledge about the virus grows and plenty of assistance in the form of cash and supplies.

What would you have done differently, based on the information available at the time - such as in late February when Pelosi held her Chinatown hug and kiss tour. Maybe you can copy off Bidenz plan that he plagiarized from Trump. [wink]

HappySeller2014

bosco, are you better off than four years ago? Dig deep and tell us what has the Trump administraton done for you. When you look in the mirror, are you more pleased with yourself in 2020 than 2016? How do you feel about your brothers and sisters and fellow Americans? And your associates who have either raised their black voices, or simply given up?

Dare I say, you remind me of some of the most hoodwinked tribes of all time. Lemmings and bison love to congregate too, until they all follow each other over a cliff.

Actually and truthfully, happyseller, we at Bosco Manor are better off than we were four years ago. We are enjoying the fruits of earlier labors and savings. Our investment plans are doing well and we haven't had to tap them yet. Bosco/Eric Trump can type anything he thinks you want to hear in this little comment box and knows you have no way to prove him right or wrong, So I would go with your first impression of him, like I did, which is why I call him Eric Trump, and just assume he has already walked off the cliff and landed on his head. Also notice he didn't actually answer your question, which you can also assume it's because he landed on his head. Next time you talk to him can you ask him about Cuba, socialism and math? He still hasn't answered my questions about those.

HappySeller2014

bosco, your earlier labors and savings were accumulated pre-Trump, if you truly are doing as well as you are saying.

I am glad to hear the bosco manor is doing well. What, specifically, has the Trump administration done to improve your immediate family, and the families of your fellow black neighbors, friends and Americans?

Your wise decisions earlier in life are now paying off, as are mine. But that is on me, and you.

It never ceases to amaze me when the Trump tribe cannot provide any specifics. God is their protector and COVID-19 is a liberal media hoax, but when you ask for specifics, the silence is deafening.

phydeaux994

You are absolutely right Happy, the RRR(RadicalRightRepublicans)/BTT(BullyTagTeam) never talk about anything Trump does to MAGA. All they do is bash and blame the Democrats for not doing what the President of the United States should be doing. It’s the Governor’s fault, it’s Nancy Palosi’s fault, it’s Chuck Schumer’s fault, the only thing they want from Trump is to keep America WHITE. They don’t care that we have a quarter million dead, millions out of work with no help from Trump, they don’t care that we have no allies left, they don’t care that the MAJORITY of the citizens that didn’t vote for him like the ACA and don’t want Roe vs Wade overturned and who support the need for Racial Justice in America. They don’t care that he has ignored the Constitution and the Rule of Law. They don’t care that he is Vladimir Putin’s Puppet and bows down to Kim Jong Un and Crown Prince Mohammed bin Satan and Xi and every other two bit Dictator who challenge him. And they will vote for him to serve 4 more years. And that is still a possibility, people, thanks to those who HATE the AMERICA that the MAJORITY of her citizens are crying to return to.

I believe Bosco has a government pension and takes social security, which he called a giant ponzu scheme. MD1756

Bosco, did you see the link I posted in response to zane3's repeated citations of the CDC guidelines. Normally I would give considerable weight to what the CDC say (just as before the Trump administration I would the U.S. EPA), however Trump has politicized it as he has the EPA. When science or the best available information goes against what he wants to do, he just doesn't allow that information to be made public. For the article on the CDC see: https://www.propublica.org/article/inside-the-fall-of-the-cdc?utm_source=pocket-newtab. There were similar stories about the EPA when first Pruitt then Wheeler became the Administrators. I certainly believe the article about the CDC.

What a bad approach to problem solving! These parents are teaching their children it is okay to cut school. Not good! It makes it clear this protest is not about valuing education.

Yup. That’ll teach FCPS. Darn them for supplying education in the safest possible way during a world pandemic. Teach your kids to resist rather than persist.

FCPS, keep up virtual learning until we are all safe. Keep forcing parents to parent, like they signed up to do the day their children were born. For those parents who moan and complain and wail, oh well, their kids will just be working for mine one day.

public-redux

I’ll bet they don’t stand at attention in their living room either every time the National Anthem is playing on their TV. They might even teach their children to think for themselves.

HappySeller2014

What you do in your living room is your own business. But what you do in public when surrounded by your fellow Americans, like at Mission BBQ, shows your true colors as a man, a patriot, and respector of all thoe who fight to protect us and respond first to dangers and emergencies.

public-redux

Or a woman, right?

public-redux

Last night I was out in public at a seafood shack on the bay. There was a tattered US flag on the wharf. Not a single person stood up to honor it. Then a boat docked to come to the restaurant. It was flying a US flag. Not a single person stood to honor it. Then a pick-up pulled into the parking lot flying a US flag. Not a single person stood to honor it.

Why are you such a lemming?

public-redux

So by your own admission, you act like a patriot when others can see you and not when alone. Pretty sad.

HappySeller2014

Public, you are missing the forest for the trees.

You do not need to stand up and salute every US flag flying everywhere. Nice try, but you way off base.

However, during a known event where others are participating to show their patriotism, respect and honor, you should show your respect. Or immediately leave. To not do so is to be an insignificant and pitiful American.

Pro-Choice/Privileged W. Woman

@Public-Redux

Perhaps subconsciously?

Perhaps. But I hope they are consciously teaching their kids to think for themselves. I hope the next generation aren’t blind followers like Happy Seller.

shiftless88

Mrs. Steinberg; what is your plan if most of the teachers do not want to come into school? I am happy that you are willing to sacrifice others to make your life easier but not everyone might be.

shiftless88

So the lesson Mrs Steinberg is teaching her kids is this; "when it is hard you have to give up." Great lesson.

HappySeller2014

I was thinking exactly the same thing as I read the article. She is basically teaching her children that, if times are tough, it is OK to just quit.

And she is trying to encourage others to join her on her trainwreck. I hope the lemming population is rather low in Frederick County.

Well said

Mjeb123

When parents have this negative attitude toward virtual learning why would they expect their children to be successful at it? Of course it’s not anyone’s first choice but it is the SAFE choice. How about we teach our children how to make the best of a terrible situation and not allow them to make excuses about why this is t going to work for them. I have three children currently participating in virtual learning, and while they would love to be back at school they suck it up and do their best! Because that’s what I expect. This time does not have to be wasted, let’s set a good example as parents.

Thewheelone

Mjeb123, you hit the nail on the head; our kids model our behavior and attitudes and if the expectation parents have is that the kids will buck up and do what is required, they will usually do it. Nobody likes the fact that our kids are doing virtual learning so it really comes down to a matter of caution.

EZRider

Yes, kids model the behavior of their parents. Could that account for some of the disparities in disciplinary rates - even arrest rates - among certain communities OR even the academic success rates among certain communities?

Stay on task, Bosco! [offtopic][tongue]

That's a good quote, threecents. I don't pretend to be anything other than what I am. I call 'em as I see 'em. To some that may be seen as racist if that's all they are looking for and that's the only card in their deck. I get a chuckle out of that because I know what's in my mind and heart.

And, once again, I'll urge anyone who has never done so to do a ride along with local law enforcement and see with your own eyes what goes on in some of these "communities" and the basic causes of second, third, and fourth generation criminals. Apple don't fall too far from the tree.

Stay well and vote!

But the bottom line bosco, is that you believe that the people that live in these “certain communities” are dumb, violent people, inferior to “your community”. But you believe that you can’t be called a Racist because............???, even though you have just expressed the very definition of Racism. You are, or you aren’t, identified by the words that come out of your mouth. bosco, you and CD both are, as is Donald John Trump. And that is the terrible truth about America that needs to be fixed, the reason the supporters of the BLM Movement are Peacefully Protesting.

EZRider

Once again, Fido, your own twisted prejudices are projecting. I said "kids model the behavior of their parents. Could that account for some of the disparities in disciplinary rates - even arrest rates - among certain communities OR even the academic success rates among certain communities?" and you twisted that into a statement on what you think I believe by posting " you believe that the people that live in these “certain communities” are dumb, violent people, inferior to “your community"."

Don't pretend to know what I believe or what I think as an excuse for playing your worn out race card. Why are you so focused on playing the racist card? Is it to cover up your own prejudices and inadequacies?

Don't bother to answer, just think about it.

You should see some of the stuff that is posted on Facebook. Like this

I just spoke with Frederick county Sheriff. He is 100% with us and he thinks that virtual learning and schools remaining closed (for in person) is destroying our society. He says he believes domestic violence and protection orders are trending up and suicides and drug overdoses have increased. He is going to try to have an analyst get some statistics together to support what he believes to be true and hopefully can get those to us next week. I think he is a great person to have on our side and hopefully we can use this in our arsenal for our next round of emails and rallying.

If you can take the time to do this YOU can Take the time to help your children with the virtual learning!

I know that Mental health and all of those things are important. However there are resources for available for people who need help.

Well, heck, if Chuck Jenkins says it, you can take it to the bank. The bank of the Potomac River.

I believe many children have home schooled for decades with no adverse mental health consequences.

Mjeb, I agree with you. My granddaughter is doing great overall with the online program, but her parents, though not thrilled with having to deal with it, are very supportive of her, and of what is. Yet, her best pal’s parents do nothing but puss and moan about how screwed up everything is, and so their daughter is not doing so great with it. My next door neighbors are both FCPS teachers and it has been brutal on them, too. The system has been hard to adjust to, some kids get no support from their parents, many are sharing everything from tablets, to work space with siblings. It’s hard on everyone, but even though everyone is tired of hearing about it, the virus hasn’t gone away, and it is by all signs growing worse in almost every state. And it will in all likelihood get much worse this winter. I feel for the working parents, I do! But sending the kids back to school is only going make this madness last longer, with a new round of intensity.
