1 - Why are you running for this office? (75 words max)
I am the most qualified candidate based on my experience and will provide moderate common-sense leadership to the comptroller’s office. I have a strong record of reducing taxes and sound fiscal policy while forging bipartisan relationships.
2 - What experience (work, political or other) has prepared you to hold this office? (100 words max)
I believe I am uniquely qualified to carry on the tradition of strong independent Maryland comptrollers. As the leader of one of Maryland’s largest counties, my administration has earned praise for strong fiscal management and innovation with a fully funded pension obligation and 24 AAA bond ratings, a distinction earned by only 2% of counties nationwide. The next comptroller will need to be tested with governmental experience and someone who has advocated to protect the state’s taxpayers and small businesses.
3 - Are there any important issues, other than qualifications, that voters should consider? (100 words max)
Based on the current climate, I believe taxpayers are looking for a common-sense moderate who will be a good trustee of the people’s money. I will bring a balancing nature to the Board of Public Works and will not turn it into a progressive platform for issues not related to the comptroller’s position.
4 - For people unfamiliar with the duties of a comptroller, how do you define the job? Why does it matter who holds this position? (100 words max)
In addition to being the state’s tax collector, the comptroller is a member of the Board of Public Works and chairs the Board of Revenue Estimates. The position is very important, as the comptroller is the representative of all Maryland taxpayers.
5 - What is one thing the current comptroller has done that you would do differently? (100 words max)
I would improve customer service through new digital platforms for small business and taxpayers to file taxes and for technical assistance.
