Fatal hit and run U. S. 15

U.S. Marine Cpl. William Ferrell, 21, of Carthage, N.C., was struck and killed by a hit-and-run driver sometime around 10:30 p.m. Tuesday while he was attempting to assist another motorist on northbound U.S. 15 near Auburn Road, north of Frederick.

A man was killed late Tuesday in a hit-and-run crash on U.S. 15 near Auburn Road just south of Thurmont, according to Maryland State Police.

William Ferrell, 21, of Carthage, N.C., had pulled over to assist another motorist at about 10:55 p.m. when he was struck by an unknown type of vehicle, according to a Maryland State Police news release. Police believe the vehicle was a truck tractor or heavy-duty pick-up truck towing a car hauling/carrier trailer.

Witnesses said the driver did stop about 100 yards down the road immediately after the crash, but drove away a few minutes later while witnesses tried to help Ferrell, according to subsequent press releases. Collision reconstruction experts believe Ferrell was standing next to the driver's side of his truck off the roadway when he was struck.

Ferrell was a corporal in the U.S. Marine Corps assigned to Camp David, according to state police.

Police closed off U.S. 15 northbound for four hours while the crash was investigated. During that time traffic was diverted to Md. 806.

Maryland State Police ask anyone who may have witnessed this collision, or has information pertaining to the striking vehicle to call 301-600-4151. The striking vehicle should have noticeable damage to the right side of its power unit or to the right side of its trailer, the release stated.

I am always surprised by people who think by asking that the offender turn themselves in. Obviously, they leave the scene because they think they have gotten away with it.

My wife and I were on 15 north headed back to Thurmont in the heavy rain last night and most of the vehicles were driving about 40 mph as they should have been during inclement weather conditions. We were passed by several tracter trailer driving at ridiculously high speeds as well as a few cars and trucks. This is another example of people in to big of a hurry and costing the life of an innocent. Slow down people ! And drive like you have some sense. I just don't understand why people are always in a big hurry. Life is too short. My heart goes out to his family, I can't even imagine what they are going through now.

Heartbreaking; trying to help and gets killed. Hard on the family and I wish them peace. Hitting someone can be excusable in some cases; leaving the scene never is.

Semper Fi -- my thoughts and prayers are with your family.

Semper Fi, Marine. We thank you for your service, pray for those you've left behind, and hope justice is served. You were a selfless young man and you will be missed.

Are the drivers unskilled or impaired or both?

bosco

It's sad but not surprising. When the offending driver does stay on the scene it's newsworthy and often reported as such.

I hope they find him and throw the book at him.

How awful. Looks like the getaway vehicle should have some damage on its right side. Was it raining heavy at that time?

My heart goes out to the young man's family. How awful and tragic. Who ever did this, do the right thing and turn yourself in.
