FCSO vehicle

A Frederick County Sheriff’s Office vehicle is pictured.

Police are warning residents of a string of scams in which a person comes to residents' homes asking for money, alleging the victim's relative needs help.

Frederick County Sheriff's Office deputies and detectives received multiple reports of such activity in the past week, according to a statement issued Wednesday. Spokesman Todd Wivell knew of three such scam incidents this week, including two in the Myersville area.

“These cases typically start with the suspect contacting the victim over the phone and stating that a family member has been arrested and the victim needs to pay the family member’s bail or bond,” Cpl. Kevin Britt, FCSO criminal investigation section detective, said in a news release. “The suspect tells the victim that they will come to the victim’s residence later that day to retrieve the money ... Not until after providing the suspect the money does the victim realize that their family member is perfectly fine."

A situation like that would not occur if a relative actually needed bail money, according to police.

"At no time will anyone associated with a family member’s bail or bond come to your house to collect those fees," Britt said.

The sheriff office's offered advice on how to identify a potential scam and act:

  • Almost all scams have a sense of urgency, such as, "if you don’t act now, something bad will happen."
  • The suspect will typically tell you not to contact the police or family.
  • Slow down and think, don’t let them rush you.
  • Call a trusted family member or the FCSO at 301-600-1046 to tell them what is happening if you think something is suspicious.

There are currently several open cases of this scam, and FCSO detectives are conducting an ongoing investigation. If you have experienced this scam or have any information, police ask that you call 301-600-1046.

How stupid do you have to be to fall for one of these types of scams?

Whatsup

Let's not call people stupid. People tend to be trusting of others, especially older citizens. These scammers are good, they know how to apply the pressure. It is unfortunate people are fooled, but that does not make them "'stupid".

bosco

What's wrong with stupid?

stu·pid

/ˈst(y)o͞opəd

adjective

having or showing a great lack of intelligence or common sense.

The key words there are "Common Sense"

Does "ignorant" work better for you?

C.D.Reid

"Ignorant" is far more politically correct, bosco. I'm proud of you for switching to it! [thumbup][thumbup][thumbup] But, I do have to agree with you, though. No matter what the circumstances of potential victims (age, language, schooling, etc.,) in this day and age, and with all the warnings that have been issued for years now regarding scams, one does have to be pretty stupid to fall for one.

C.D.Reid

Well fido, we could also say “people who Worship a Scuzzball like Beijing Joe Biden are stupid”. unEducated and unable to distinguish what is reasonable," now couldn't we? (Question: why do you capitalize certain letters in your comments the way you do? Is it to distinguish your own, individual writing "style?")

bosco

Trump still lives in Fido's head.

Awteam2021

Words have meanings. For example: not knowing that one is scamming you is “ignorant” to that fact . Where as, knowingly, willfully engaging in activities that are harmful to you and/or others, is “stupid”. “Common sense” applies to what’s general known in practical matters, common actions, like not crossing the street, walking into on coming traffic.

So Bosco, when you were a postal worker delivery mail, and there was a threatening dog did you run? Stand still? Or that customer wouldn’t get mail that day?

Were you ignorant, stupid or using common sense🤷‍♂️.

phydeaux994

I do it so some people won’t miss the point I am making Dave. Sometimes I use all caps to do the same thing so I guess you could call it my writing style. I believe it’s very effective. Peace.✌️😷

phydeaux994

As Biden does in yours bosco. Except you mention Biden orders of magnitude more than I mention Trump. But I admit, Trump is hard to forget. Peace on you too bosco. ✌️😷

bosco

Biden hasn't taken up residence yet, Fido. All I have to do is mention how well he is doing with border security, his frequent press conferences, his robust physical and mental acuity, and throw in his fiscally responsible spending plans. (that's sarcasm) Don't have to depend on lies, like those made up by the left about Trump, but just comment on what is actually going on. That's enough to get the liberals in a twist.

Bosco. Not sure if you understand the differences of - “stupid, ignorant and common sense”. I would classify you as “ignorant”. You recognize a scam but others might not. Sense you recognize a scam, and others don’t , wouldn’t you be ignorant to the fact that others might not? Or if you know it’s a scam, everyone else should know that also?... As aware. You wouldn’t be making less of folks scammed? They are stupid.

bosco

I would say you are ignorant for assuming I worked for the USPS and stupid for claiming that I ever said I did - especially after all this time and you can't provide any proof other than your own delusions. How does it feel to prove yourself ignorant and stupid in a public forum?

Awteam2021

I not sure... like Bosco-ish choosing to run from the dog 🐶 while delivering mail. Know the feeling?

C.D.Reid

Aw should know, bosco. After all, he's the one who said that you and I are "Both extremely stupid and willfully ignorant," remember?

bosco

And yet he's the delusional one insisting that just because somebody took the civil service exam they therefore worked for the USPS. It's laughable.

C.D.Reid

More than laughable if you ask me. His fetish with you is like fido's with me. I guess it's because we're such "nice guys," huh? After all, that claim works for Beijing Joe.

bosco

Yep. He jumped to a conclusion, posted that I claimed to work for the post office, and when I called him out for posting BS, he could never come up with a quote that I posted to prove his false conclusion - because there is none. Yet, he can't back off his delusional thinking and proves it with every mail-related post.

Cameras at the door and wasn't born yesterday....yeah...give it a try.
