A man was flown from a construction site in Frederick early Thursday after a 2-ton backhoe bucket fell over a trench.

Police and fire officials were called at about 8:30 a.m. to Prospect Hall, the former site of St. John's Catholic Prep, on Butterfly Lane.

The man was working in a trench when the bucket fell from a backhoe, said Doug Brown, spokesman for the Division of Fire and Rescue Services.

The man was freed from the trench before rescue workers arrived and was flown from the scene because of the potential for serious internal injuries, Brown said.

Officials did not release the man's name Thursday.

The bucket was obviously not secured to the boom. Probably someone was switching buckets, got distracted (phone, coworker activity, etc) and forgot to secure the pins that hold the bucket.

pins DO NOT hold the buckets on trackhoes it's all hydraulic.like a clamp so he didn't have it clamped properly or he hit the release! either way it's a shame

Yes, pins do attach the buckets to the booms. Both are then manuvered by the hydraulic lines.

Safety is NO accident. Not too long a guy had to be rescued from a flooded trench. What gives?

Guys, they've *moved* after being there since 1959 and you still don't know which school this was. Prospect Hall was the *high* school. Saint John Regional (SJRCS) is the elementary school for all Catholic parishes in Frederick County and it used to be on E. 2nd., but is now located on Opossomtown Pike.

Prospect Hall is the name of the house.

^ That's not the issue. The article originally said it was the former home of the regional school (The K-8 school), when it should have said the high school. They have since fixed it. It is embarrassing that the FNP could not get this correct (it isn't the first time they have messed this up).

Did the bucket strike the guy, or did it cause a cave in of the trench?
