Mountain Bike Race

The first group of racers leave the start of the 2021 USA Cycling Marathon Mountain Bike National Championships which were held Saturday morning. The race began in stages on Gambrill Park Road and followed a 32 mile course through Gambrill State Park and the Frederick Watershed. More than 250 competitors from across the country participated in the race.

Before the sun had fully risen Saturday morning, hundreds of people gathered on Gambrill Mountain under a bright canopy of orange and yellow leaves, eyeing the nearby starting line with anticipation.

USA Cycling’s 2021 Marathon Mountain Bike National Championships drew about 230 competitors and hundreds more spectators to Frederick County this weekend. It was a solid opportunity for area businesses, said Frederick Mayor Michael O’Connor.

Great job to the staff in the Maryland Park Service for literally creating parking lots and trail bridges for this event among the many other preparations! The endless amounts of trail work to prepare for this race among all of the other duties is truly impressive with the 3 staff members the park can afford. A huge congratulations and thank you goes out to the Maryland Conservation Corps and Veteran Conservation Corps for assisting in the trail endeavors!

Great job Mr. Zeideles of pulling this off in record time and for making an immediate impact in your new role. Please also bring some outdoor concerts to the Keys Stadium.

It’s interesting that they moved it from a state with transgender laws considering there are men’s and women’s classes? Im willing to bet there is a male or 2 who couldn’t cut it in the men’s class and now competes in the women’s class!

Who won?

EABiker

There were 23 different classes based upon age, sex, bike type, ability, and the mix of all of those, so there were 23 winners. A great event for our area and community!
