Shana Greenbaum launched Healthy Fresh Meals in 2016 in Washington, D.C., as a healthy meal delivery service. She recently expanded the business to Frederick as she said her clientele has grown. The business also serves other parts of Maryland and Virginia. Greenbaum recently spoke with The News-Post to explain how her business works.
What made you start the business?
I was cooking healthy food for myself and working in the restaurant business. I had a lot of people requesting meals, so I decided to hire some chefs and start promoting it, and it really took off.
What made you expand to Frederick?
I have a couple of friends who live there, and then we had a couple of customers that were interested in the service but we did not service there, so we decided just to expand. We do serve Gaithersburg, so it’s just a little further up I-270.
How does the service work?
All of the meals are prepared fresh every single week to order. Customers order Saturday through Friday morning, we take all of the orders and prepare them and send them out on Sunday to homes and on Mondays to offices. There’s no subscriptions, no contracts and no minimums, so a customer can order two meals or 15 meals or whatever they think they need for the week. We source local ingredients, we come up with our own recipes and we try to keep everything as clean as possible. So no added preservatives, no extra sodium and we cater to different diets like keto, low carb, vegan and vegetarian. We really are reaching all of the different diets out there. We also do custom meals for people who are more into fitness or professional athletes. The menu changes every single week so we have a different variety. There are any where from six to 15 meals that are different every single week and then we have our custom menu that stays the same.
How much are the meals?
$10 to $13 a meal, and there’s a flat $10 delivery fee.
Are all of the meals displayed on the website?
Yes. Everything is a la carte so people can pick whatever they want. They can pick from low carb, custom, breakfast, snacks and they choose their portion then just add it to their cart.
And all the customer has to do is just heat up the meal?
Yes. Everything is delivered cold and you just pop it in the refrigerator. They also all come with an expiration date with all of the calories and nutrition details.
