Rosa Hernandez opened Pelomania Salon in Francis Scott Key Mall on Dec. 14. Hernandez has more than 17 years of hairdressing experience and is excited to be opening her own business.
Two other hairstylists work in the salon, and they provide a variety of hair services. Appointments and walk-ins are welcome.
Hernandez spoke with The Frederick News-Post to answer some questions about her new business. This interview has been edited for clarity.
How has the response been so far?
So far it has been great, very good.
How did you get into hairdressing?
I was just cutting all my cousins' hair [in El Salvador], and when I came to this country … I worked, had a baby, and then two years later I said, “I want to be a hairstylist.” I’ve always wanted to. My husband said, “Go for it.” I’ve been hairdressing for 17 years now.
Did you work in other salons in Frederick?
I worked before at Amy’s Hair Salon for three and a half years. I worked for SmartStyle in Walmart, and then I opened my salon. That was a couple of years ago with a partner. It didn’t work, so we decided to close out. And then I came back with the company, and then the salon I worked at closed. And I decided to open my own again.
Where are you located?
It’s inside the mall, next to Victoria’s Secret.
Why did you choose that location?
I used to work [at a salon] over here for four years, and I have all my clientele around in the area. And it was an empty space, so I said, “Let me try.”
What kind of services do you offer?
Color, highlights, haircuts, women’s cuts, kids’ cuts, men’s cuts, relaxers, perms, keratin treatments, updos.
What are you excited for about opening your own business?
I’m excited that I’m my own boss. I wanted to do something that I like to do, and by myself. Not connected to any company, just on my own. And to make the customers happy, of course.
