The Frederick County Board of Education voted Wednesday night to name the new east county area school Blue Heron Elementary.
The FCPS School Name Recommendation Committee proposed three names out of 39 ideas that had been suggested. Blue Heron Elementary had top priority, followed by Linganore Creek Elementary and Lakeside Elementary.
The committee, which included local businesses, community representatives, PTA members, parents and FCPS staff, collected the first round of public input in April.
After narrowing the suggestions down to eight, a second survey was taken, and the committee made sure the suggestions fell in line with FCPS policy for naming schools. According to Policy 201, the school board may name schools after a historical event and a regional or local landmark or location, but not after people.
According to the FCPS website, Blue Heron Elementary is slated for construction in the Lake Linganore Hamptons West community. If funding is available, it is scheduled to open in August 2021.
