The Frederick County Council interviewed six finalists for the open Board of Education position Friday afternoon.

The six finalists were Tracy Dunheimer, Rae Gallagher, Susan Johnson, April Miller, Ron Peppe and Caleb Rose, according to a press release.

Miller and Peppe are the only two candidates who are former board members. Miller served from 2010 to 2018, and Peppe served from 1997 to 2004.

The selected candidate will fill a vacancy left by current board member Joy Schaefer.

Although her current term doesn’t end until December 2020, Schaefer is resigning in order to step into her new role as the county’s director of government affairs and public policy.

The council will hold a public forum on Tuesday, Dec. 17, to hear feedback from the community on the six finalists.

The council is expected to whittle down the list to three candidates that night, which will then be submitted to County Executive Jan Gardner.

Gardner will then submit one name back to the council for confirmation.

The selected applicant will fill the unexpired term until it ends in December 2020.

The interviews of the six applicants will be broadcast on cable channels and Frederick County Government television at various times until Tuesday. To watch the interviews online, go to

What no Cindy Rose?

Oh dear. Are they related?[unsure]

No, they are not. There was also a third Rose, Dean, who applied but did not get an interview. I believe he is also going to run. None of them are related.

We are lucky to have these excellent candidates for School Board. I would not be surprised to see all of them running next year. For this particular one-year slot, I would like to see one of the less experienced people given an opportunity to see how they fit in. Perhaps Caleb Rose is the best choice.
