Pollo Campero opened Aug. 30 on the Golden Mile. Andy Cabral, CEO of Latin Flavor Corp., recently spoke to The News-Post about the restaurant and what to expect at its grand opening on Sept. 14.
What made Pollo Campero expand to Frederick?
We started in Manassas and Springfield, Virginia, and Frederick was just a natural fit. We have a lot of people come down to Manassas on the weekends and say they drive from Frederick, suggesting that we could open one in Frederick. The Boston Market [closing] came on our radar and we had the opportunity to take over the building and we just jumped on it.
What are some of the popular items on the menu?
Fried chicken is what we’re known for. In the U.S. we introduced grilled chicken as well. We also have camperitos and we started new items such as sandwiches, which comes extra crunchy or grilled, and then our campero salads.
Describe the atmosphere of the restaurant.
It’s more relaxed. You don’t need to come here dressed up. You can come here after work, during work and on the weekends. It’s family-oriented and we have balloons for kids. We also have popular drinks such as horchata, mango and lemonade that are authentic to people who come from Central America.
The restaurant also gives back to the local community, how does Pollo Campero plan to give back to Frederick?
We do a lot of stuff with St. Jude’s regionally and nationally. Locally we like to give back to a lot of the churches and schools. For schools we usually sponsor them for certain events and we can have a fundraising night where we donate a portion of the proceeds to the local school. During scheduled times throughout the year we give a portion of our sales back to the school. We also have a yearly Easter egg hunt where we invite local charities out as well.
You also cater, correct?
Yes, we deliver and set up the food. A lot of our catering jobs are at car dealerships, office buildings and other organizations. We also do birthday parties. We can do as little as 10 people to as much as 400.
How excited are you to bring Pollo Campero to the Frederick area?
We’re really excited to be up here, this has been something that’s been on our radar for a while. We’ve been working on this location for a little over a year now. The restaurant is right in the center of the Golden Mile, which for us was a great opportunity because it needs revitalization. We’re excited to start some of that revitalization on this side of town.
We have a grand opening on Sept. 14 from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. The first 50 people will get free chicken for a year and the next 100 people will get free chicken for six months.
