The Frederick Fairgrounds has gone to the dogs.

About 75 Bernese mountain dogs and their handlers took part Friday in the second day of a three-day event that features prizes for obedience, agility and more.

There’s also a best of breed for both male and female, according to Ellen Hayes, who is chair of this year’s Potomac Valley Bernese Mountain Dog Specialty Show, which is now in its 21st year.

Dogs from as far as Ohio and Alabama are entered in this year’s competition.

“They’re just beautiful,” Hayes said of the breed. “They’re graceful, they’re happy to be with their handlers. That’s the nature of that breed. They’re a gentle, happy dog.”

The American Kennel Club event continues Saturday with more competitions. The show will start at 8:30 a.m. and continue into the early afternoon. The public is invited to watch at no cost.

seems that with such small yards these days that people still breed such large dogs

They sure are beautiful animals. I got a photo of one in Amsterdam several years ago who looked like he was used to having his picture taken, such a regal pose. I’d love to have one of these and a Newfie to complement him.

Cool story bro
