Oasis Senior Advisors is a national company that helps seniors and their families find the right living facility for their loved one. Kriste Hartman Kidd, the franchisee of the Frederick chapter, started the local service in the spring and recently sat down with The News-Post to explain more about the service and why she got into the business.

Would you say this is a growing need across the aging community?

Absolutely. I just placed my 19th client yesterday, and I have four more that I’m placing within the next two weeks.

Have you always been in this line of work?

I was a personal caregiver for my grandfather for 10 years, and that led me to my course work in gerontology and then I got my masters in thanatology, which is the science of death, dying, grief and bereavement. I have a five-year background in hospice, and I’m also a former executive director of an assistant living facility.

What’s your favorite part about working in this industry?

Being able to be a resource of support when families have no idea in which direction to go. There’s a lot of families that don’t know about the financial considerations that help reduce monthly costs like long-term car insurance, aid and attendance, things like that. I like being able to connect people with resources whether it’s senior housing or home care, hospice, real estate agents, elder care lawyers or whatever they need.

In what ways do you help seniors and their families select a suitable living center?

I meet with families in person, and Oasis has a proprietary software that houses all of the communities in my territory — Washington, Carroll and Frederick counties and also northern Virginia. When I meet with the families, I go over their basic demographics, their activities of daily living, any memory concerns and financial means. From there I push a button and their demographics are cross-referenced with the assisted living communities and it makes an unbiased match.

What makes Oasis Senior Advisors different than the competition?

We’re in person, we have the proprietary software that no other competition does, and we’re also required to be Certified Senior Advisors. We’re nationwide. If Mom and Dad are here and a daughter is in Arizona, I can get the information from the parents here and transfer it to the Oasis adviser in Arizona.

Interesting article, but it does not give you the cost of the service. Using Google, you can look up the reviews for all nursing homes and their prices. This looks like a service for the technology challenged.

I would hope the facilities pay a fee to be listed with the service? This isn't just nursing homes, may even include independent to assisted to nursing progressives types like where my mom lives? And different places make different arrangements for paying for it (some take all your funds and provide for the rest of your life) some help you to deal with the VA, Uso using a service narrows choices and amenities down. If you are caring for a needy senior and a family you simply may not have time or opportunity to do this properly yourself.

Oasis Senior Advisors is a free service to seniors and their families. Assisted Living and Independent Living communities pay a referral fee for our services when a move-in occurs. You can Google all you want, but most all assisted living and independent living communities do not list their monthly fees. I have personally vetted all of the communities and know their pricing, level of care offered, service and amenities, staffing and security and the culture of the community. Most of my clients are a "crisis" situation, meaning a medical event has occurred and they are either in the hospital or skilled nursing rehab and returning home is no longer a safe option. Families usually are not technology challenged, rather challenged by responsibilities of caring for their parent, children of their own and careers. Using the services of Oasis can help reduce time and stress when needing to find a new home for their loved one.

Sounds like a great service. Keep up the good work!
