Thurmont Moser Road Speed

Frederick County will not reduce the speed limit on a county-owned section of Moser Road in Thurmont from 35 mph to 25.

The speed of traffic entering and exiting Thurmont along a county-owned section of Moser Road raised eyebrows earlier this year, but won’t lead to a change to the posted speed limit.

Multiple people living in and around Thurmont requested that the county assess if the road’s speed limit should be lowered from 35 mph to 25.

Frederick County’s Division of Public Works placed two speed-detecting signs on the county-owned section of Moser Road for a week spanning late February and early March. A majority of the vehicles on Moser Road were traveling at 40 mph.

“The consensus was not to change the speed limit on the county section of Moser Road,” said Greg Jones, engineering supervisor with the county Division of Public Works.

Eighty-five percent of vehicles were going 42 mph or slower leaving Thurmont and 40 mph or less entering Thurmont, according to data collected by the signs.

The primary reason for doing a speed study is to share the data with the Frederick County Sheriff’s Office to make enforcement decisions, Jones said.

The speed limit on county-owned roads ranges from 25 to 50 mph in Frederick County, and state law specifies the speed limit for certain road types, Jones said.

In an urban setting, where the road has curb and gutter, the state limit would be 30 mph, but the county has the option to also make the speed limits lower, Jones offered as an example.

Moser Road is frequented by pedestrians crossing at the Trolley Trail and visiting the Thurmont Regional Library.

Some drivers were caught speeding regardless of the signs. The maximum speed detected heading toward Thurmont was 77 mph and leaving was 81 mph.

“Unfortunately, there’s a lot of places where people are going over the speed limit,” Jones said.
