Mount Airy Town Council members introduced an ordinance Monday that could expedite the event approval process.

The ordinance will give Mount Airy's mayor or a designated town staff member the authority to approve alcohol consumption on public property as part of annual or repeated events that have been previously approved, said Mount Airy attorney Thomas McCarron.

Currently, council members approved alcohol consumption through a resolution. The ordinance should be able to expedite the approval of alcohol consumption at events.

Council members will still be able to reject alcohol consumption with the new ordinance. The mayor or town staff member will give the Town Council a heads-up on the event. If the council wants to rescind or change approval, they will need to do so through a resolution, McCarron said.

The events will still need to be approved by the liquor boards in Frederick or Carroll counties, depending on where the event will occur, he said.
