Fort Detrick will celebrate the U.S. Army's 244th birthday Wednesday.

To celebrate, artist Ellouise Schoettler will perform "Ready to Serve," a program created from World War I letters French nurses sent home. A cake cutting will occur after the performance.

“We hold this observance to not only celebrate the Army’s history but to focus attention on our Army’s achievements, honoring our Soldiers and civilians, our Army heroes, who, time and again, protect and secure the freedoms we hold dear,” Garrison Commander Col. Scott Halter said in a press release.
