A bridge over the Monocacy River on Bullfrog Road east of Emmitsburg will be closed for several weeks while engineers review it because of safety concerns, according to the Frederick County Office of Transportation Engineering.

The closure, which was announced Friday, is expected to last several weeks.

The bridge was built in 1908 and repairs were made in 1996 and 2010. It’s a single-span steel through-truss bridge of camelback design.

The bridge’s single-lane span is about 183 feet long and has a road width of about 13 feet.

It has a posted weight restriction of 30,000 pounds.

A detour in place while the bridge is closed will use Bollinger School Road, Md. 140 and Bullfrog Road.

The repairs will be made by the county’s Office of Transportation Engineering and Office of Highway Operations.
