Md 28 Bridge Work

The Md. 28 bridge over the Monocacy River has been shut down for emergency repairs. Detours are in place.

A bridge over the Monocacy River in southern Frederick County has been closed for emergency road work, according to the State Highway Administration.

Beginning at 10 a.m. Tuesday, crews closed both lanes of the bridge on Md. 28 in order to repair drainage grates, according to an SHA release.

There is no estimated time for the work to be finished.

A detour will use Md. 109, Md. 355, Md. 80 and Md. 85, and drivers are encouraged to allow extra travel time during the work.

The $8.4 million rehabilitation project on the bridge began in 2018, and is expected to finish by the fall.

Md. 28 runs from Point of Rocks into Montgomery County through the communities of Dickerson and Darnestown to Rockville.

The section of Md. 28 with the bridge is used by about 9,300 vehicles per day.

The bridge, built in 1931, was deemed structurally deficient in 2015 because of the condition of its deck, although the bridge itself was structurally sound.

The bridge was reopened around 3 p.m. Tuesday.

This article is poorly written. I think it means they close both lanes on the bridge after 9:30am and then re-open after 3:30pm on a daily basis.

I drive over this bridge every day. Some of the new grates they installed several weeks ago started to come up. They had to close the "new" side (only one side is driveable at this time) to fix those grates. They are now fixed.

It is poorly written.

I drove across that bridge yesterday am.

Then the FNP headlines the story that reads as if it’s closed, closed. And instructs to use alternative routes. But then it says it reopened.

FNP - hire me. I can write better.

So the story reads as if it will be closed. But it says it reopened at 3pm.

Are the emergency repairs complete? Please clarify

Yes; they are complete.

This is a good thing. I felt like I was taking my life in my hands when I traveled over that bridge.
