Going for gold: Girl wins carnival goldfish (copy)

McKenzie Coblentz is filled with excitement as she takes throws, wins and receives a goldfish in the goldfish bowl game in 2016 at the Rocky Ridge Volunteer Fire Company Carnival.

It’s Tax-Free Week. Shop Maryland Tax-Free Week, which continues through Saturday. Qualifying apparel and footwear $100 or less, per item, are exempt from the state sales tax. Senior Services Advisory Board Meeting. This board advocates for seniors and collaborates with Frederick County’s Senior Services Division and the community on matters related to the needs, development and administration of services for older adults. Guest speakers at the Monday meeting, from 1 to 3 p.m., will be Nancy Norris, director of TransIt, and Roman Steichen, deputy director. The topic will be transportation. The meeting will be at the Emmitsburg Branch Public Library, 300A S. Seton Ave., Emmitsburg.

End of the carnival season. The Rocky Ridge Volunteer Fire Co.’s carnival runs Monday through Saturday and wraps up the local carnival season. Food and fun every night, along with entertainment at 7 p.m. featuring Long Time Comin’ Band on Monday; Faith Boyz at 6 p.m. followed by Elly & Drew Cooke on Tuesday; the parade at 7 p.m. Wednesday followed by the Catoctin Mountain Boys; Taylor Brown’s Elvis Show on Thursday; Dixie Wind Band on Friday; and the Forever Patsy Cline Show on Saturday. Crush it. The Freedom from Smoking program is built to help those who want to quit smoking to pass through stages and learn from any setbacks and keep moving ahead. There is no cost to participate. This six-week session starts Aug. 13, 5:30 to 7 p.m., at Frederick Memorial Hospital, Cardiac Rehab, Lower Level, 400 W. Seventh St., Frederick. Pre-registration is required. “50 First Dates.” The Downtown Frederick Partnership presents free Movies on the Creek. This week’s feature is “50 First Dates,” beginning at 8 p.m. Friday at the Carroll Creek Amphitheater, South Market Street, Frederick.
