Fred W. Rudy , 83, of Middletown, died Monday April 8, 2019, at Genesis Healthcare in Frederick. He was the husband of Patsy LaRue Wise Rudy. They were married on June 23, 1962.
Born in Middletown on November 6, 1935, he was the son of the late Ernest L. and Grace Wiles Rudy.
Fred graduated from MHS in 1953, and worked as a carpenter with contractors Calvin Shafer Sr. while in HS and later with his uncle George Wiles. He entered the U.S. Army in 1956, and served a two-year assignment at Sandia Army Base in Albuquerque, N.M., as a member of the military police division. He continued to serve his country in the Army Reserves and entered and won numerous pistol competitions. Upon retirement from the army, Fred returned home and enrolled in Radio Electronics Technology School (RETS) and worked with Stromberg Division of General Time Corporation in Washington, D.C., for several years.
In 1964, Fred began his own general contracting business in Middletown and for 40 years ran Fred W. Rudy, Builders and Contractors, Inc. and served customers throughout Frederick County. During that period, he became involved with the Frederick County Builders Association and served a term as president of that organization and on various committees. He continues as a Life Director of FCBA.
In 1974, Fred was elected to the Middletown Board of Commissioners and re-elected to serve continuously for 32 years. He was inducted into the Maryland Municipal League Officials Hall of Fame for longevity of service in 1998. Fred had the unique privilege of serving under eight Burgesses of Middletown and on various committees. He retired from the town council in 2006 and then served as Chairman of the Appeals Board for several years.
Fred was also a lifelong member of Zion Lutheran Church in Middletown where he served four terms on the Church Council, two terms as Lay President and also on various committees within the church. He was an active member of the Spirtual Enrichment Sunday School Class.
He was a former director of Grangers Mutual Insurance Company in Middletown and a member of the County Plumbing Advisory Board.
Fred loved his family, was an avid reader, enjoyed playing cards and checkers, adhered to and had an extraordinary strong work ethic. He was a man of integrity and generosity who loved using his carpentry skills to bless others. In his retirement years he began building furniture and wooden toys for his grandchildren. He enjoyed vacations, Home Builders Conventions, especially trips to Germany and Alaska.
By far, his greatest enjoyment was the designing and building of a hand-hewn log cabin for his family in the mountains in West Virginia. It became a haven for rest and relaxation for Fred, for his family and many friends over the years. Fred referred to it as his therapy and as his crowning achievement of life and went there as often as possible.
In addition to his wife he is survived by four sons S. Craig and Laura Rudy of Frederick, Mark L. and Anita Rudy of Germany, James O. and Karen Rudy of Middletown, Daniel W. and Sylvia Rudy of Boonsboro and ten grandchildren, Ryan Tomas Rudy, Margaret Grace Rudy, Matthew James Rudy, Nadia Ann Rudy, Rachel Catherine Rudy, Rebecca Emma Rudy, Lucas Korbinian Rudy, Anthony Jon Rudy, Samantha Anna Rudy, Nathan Niklas Rudy.
He was predeceased by his two sisters Ernestine Carey and Caroline Stine.
The family will receive friends on Friday April 12 from 5 to 8 p.m. at the Donald B. Thompson Funeral Home, 31 E. Main St., Middletown. Funeral services will be held 11 a.m. on Saturday April 13 from Zion Lutheran Church, 107 W. Main St., Middletown. Rev. Dr. Kathy Vitalis Hoffman will officiate. Interment will be made in Zion Lutheran Cemetery,Middletown.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Zion Lutheran Church.
