Steven Jeffrey Wiley, 60, of New Market, Maryland, passed away Thursday, November 14, 2019, at Lorien Mount Airy, surrounded by his family and friends.
Steve was born to William and Cleone Wiley on August 22, 1959, in Silver Spring, Maryland. He was very active in Young Life and graduated from Springbrook High School in 1977. Steve attended classes at the University of Maryland. He was passionate about English literature, spending a semester abroad at the University of Oxford in Cambridge, England, to study writing. He also loved astronomy, spending many cold nights searching for the Andromeda Galaxy and Orion’s Belt with his girlfriend (and future wife) Monica.
Steve worked as a Senior Programmer/Analyst for gomembers.com. He poured his life into his marriage and his three sons, spending many weekends adventuring together on Sugarloaf Mountain and at Skyline Drive. He was also an expert on classical music with an expansive collection of melodic notes that filled his home daily. Most importantly, Steve’s unwavering faith in Christ was the foundation of his life. Throughout his battle with MS, Steve’s faith provided him the strength to serve as a beacon of light to those around him.
Steve is survived by his loving and devoted wife, Monica of 37 years; sons, Andrew (Heather), Peter (Katie), and Daniel; parents, William and Cleone Wiley; brother, Bruce (Peggy) Wiley; sister, Wendy (Jim) Hamm; four grandsons; many nieces and nephews; extended family; chosen brother and sister, Ken and Paula Wilhelm; and many family friends.
The memorial service will be held on Wednesday, November 20, 2019, at 1:30 p.m. at Mount Airy Presbyterian Church. The Wiley family would like to extend their gratitude to all the staff at Glade Valley Center and Lorien Mount Airy for their attentiveness and loving care of Steve. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made in Steve’s name to the National Multiple Sclerosis Society.
