Many pundits have this unfortunate habit of framing what they want as what the American people want. I’ve been guilty of this at times. After all, what is more gratifying than the idea that the American masses are marching behind your band?

Similarly, some left-leaning writers are insisting that the great majority of Democrats want President Donald Trump impeached. And they have inconclusive polls to back their position.

Thus, we have Michelle Goldberg at The New York Times saying that, on the basis of a CNN poll, 76 percent of Democratic voters back impeachment. As she herself concedes, the poll’s question did not differentiate between wanting an impeachment inquiry and an impeachment proceeding. One looks for information. The other attempts an ouster. The Republican Senate won’t let the latter happen. So Trump wouldn’t face eviction while being given the opportunity to play victim in a partisan struggle.

When the Trump camp “leaks” that the president fears impeachment — and when he calls impeachment a “dirty, filthy, disgusting word” — do you take them at face value? This is Trump talk for “Democrats, please impeach me. I need your help in the tough election ahead.”

Actually, only about a quarter of Democratic House members say they favor impeachment, according to Politico. Of the five House members Goldberg quotes as moving in that direction, all five spoke of an inquiry, not a proceeding.

It’s hard for those who spend their days in the liberal bosom of super-safe Democratic districts to understand this: Many of the voters who replaced Republican representatives with Democrats last November do not like Trump but also do not obsess on him as you do.

These are the voters who gave Democrats control of the House. Love you, AOC, but any candidate with a D after his or her name would have won your district.

Town hall meetings are fine events, but who turns up at them? Activists, for sure. Not in attendance are working adults preferring to relax at home in their bathrobes. Nor probably are faithful registered Democrats trying to juggle three kids and four jobs.

This disconnect with ordinary Democratic voters is seen in the surprise lead of “boring” Joe Biden in the polls. This wasn’t supposed to happen, according to the passions that dominate liberal Twitter. A follower of those feeds myself, I was surprised by the outpouring of support for the seemingly centrist Biden. These things happen when Democratic voters are simply asked their opinion without having to show up at a rally.

The “no one is above the law” argument is compelling. Trouble is, the great majority of the electorate is well aware that Trump is a tax cheat, habitual liar, nasty creep and trampler of democratic norms. The sad part is that many of his supporters don’t care or rationalize away his relentless attacks on our revered institutions.

They may believe the strong economy is entirely Trump’s doing and worth the damage. They may dislike the racial insults but think he’s seriously addressing illegal immigration, which, until Trump calls for national use of E-Verify, he’s not. The idea that the additional information collected in an impeachment process would change lots of minds seems awfully naive.

And what happens to the Democrats’ agenda if impeachment becomes the national obsession? Pro-impeachers say they can push legislation at the same time. They can push, but the media won’t report — not in the midst of an impeachment frenzy.

House Speaker Nancy Pelosi understands these dynamics and is obviously trying to run out the clock on impeachment fervor as the 2020 election draws closer. The goal, after all, should be replacing Trump. Savvy Democrats will give impeachment a pass and go for the prize.

Trump is simply a vile, disgusting, incompetent con. A offensive self consumed narcissus who was shockingly elected president. A great embarrassment, mocked locally, nationally and on the world stage. Creating controversy then claiming he fixed the problem that he created . His ability to con 40% of the American population says a lot about us . He’s an offense to the Countries values that will be used against American interest worldwide going forward. Meanwhile, after his termination of office, the damage will be done. He'll have a TV contract spewing conspiracies. While others will be left to cleanup the mess.

It would take longer to impeach Trump than the time left before the 2020 elections. And the Republican Senate would never find him guilty - even though there is a massive amount of evidence that says Trump is guilty. So, call it what you will, the House will never send it to the Senate. MAGA Dump Trump!

"Love the sinner and hate the sin." fits my thoughts. he reallyis not worth any hate. But (oh my!) does he always pick the wrong decisions. Why insult our neighbors and increase my taxes? Then say it was a tax cut. If he is a genius I am waiting for him to perform to that level.

threecents

If we did manage to impeach him before 2020, would that hurt him in the general election? Would it cause unrest and even violence? Would Trump even encourage violence? I don't know if it is worth those risks to impeach Trump. Also, there is so much evidence him for various crimes, but it has not been laid out in a clear-cut way that the majority of Republicans will accept. Until that happens it might be counter-productive to impeach him.

gary4books

They may use the Impeachment Process" to collect and present the evidence. No need to be timed. The worst thing is to do nothing at all.

gabrielshorn2013

You are absolutely correct Dick. It would be an activity that will go nowhere, and just fire up his base in defense. Same goes for the house committee hearings. Trying to force Barr to give them the complete unredacted version of the Mueller Report would clearly cause Barr to violate the 6e provisions making it illegal to expose grand jury testimony. The redacted version is 97% unredacted. Any questions about a redacted section could be answered in closed sessions, the same as when national security issues are discussed. Why is that not a viable path?

"Love you, AOC, but any candidate with a D after his or her name would have won your district." Yep

Crooks or cowards? What a choice. "Can't never could."

Whats awesome is that the treasonous democrats do. It will just guarantee that Trump wins again. The dems have NO ONE that has a chance of beating him. Let the salty tears of the far loony left flow.

olefool

You gotta catch up sec...... Several polls show Trump losing badly to any one of several dems, so much so that he had to instruct his staff to lie about the numbers, just like he does all the time... https://www.rawstory.com/2019/06/trump-busted-telling-aides-to-lie-about-his-lousy-poll-numbers-new-york-times/

Trump lied about numbers? Say it aint so.[ohmy]

DickD

As a member of the Trump cult, will you be visiting him in jail?

secpol1970

Yeah he will be visiting killary and 44 when their treason is exposed.

awteam2000

“Treason?†You keep using that word. I don’t think it means what you think it does? 🤔

gary4books

When? I suggest they reveal it now. We have waited a long time and only know that she deleted email and did not fight for her staff in Africa when she was in the USA. What else? White Water? Or a pizza place basement of evil actions?

We will have to wait and see.

Gary, as a Secretary of a major federal department (in this case, the State Department), she knew that using a personal server was wrong and a security risk. I have no doubt that if any lower level less known career fed had a personal server for work, they would be terminated.

threecents

MD, Did it ever occur to you that Hillary may have used her own server because she was afraid the state department's antiquated server would be hacked? Hint: the State Dept server was hacked. Also, as Sec of State, she had the power to determine what was or wasn't classified.

hayduke2

And Trump's use of a personal phone, Ivana and Jarad using unsecured devices, security clearances being granted against recommendations, indictiments, etc. And you go back to Hillary and unproven allegations,,, Sad.

TomWheatley

So why not use the Department server? It was only emails about weddings and yoga.

MD1756

Regardless, 3cents, it was not allowed. OPM was hacked and my information obtained. Hayduke, I'm not defending any of Trump's clan. Personally I think we need to hold these people to the same level that us common people are held. If any of us did these things the book would be thrown at us. If personal communication devices were used to try to avoid creating public records I would be happy to see jail time as a possible penalty regardless of who the politician was or their party affiliation. The allegations of Hillary were unproven in a court of law but the fact she used a personal server is well established. I am not blinded by political party loyalties as some are. I am a registered democrat but only because independents don't get to vote in the primaries. Sad that some people read more into someone bringing up history.

awteam2000

Saying, as a Secretary of a major federal department (in this case, the State Department), she knew that using a personal server was wrong and a security risk. I have no doubt that if any lower level less known career fed had a personal server for work, they would be terminated, Sounds like trying to defend Trump actions to me. 🤔 How do you feel about the president, hiding behind a cowardly majority in the senate, reported of 10 accounts of obstruction of justice of Russian adversaries that interfered in the US election should be treated?

gabrielshorn2013

MD1756, that is more than a hypothetical. There were Federal employees here in Maryland that were prosecuted and found guilty for exposing classified materials by using a private e-mail account, or taking work home on a thumb drive.

MD1756

Aweteam, as I've said, I'm really an independent (although registered as a democrat) and have no party loyalties. I don't care for most politicians and when I worked at the EPA, I had little use for the political appointees since it seemed they were more interested in making a name for themselves for their next high paid position (law firm or lobbyist) rather than ensuring what they did was in the best interest of the tax payers (those who paid their salary). As far as any significant wrong doing there should be an investigation and appropriate penalties if found guilty (again regardless of political affiliation. I believe many if not most politicians and political appointees play fast and loose with the rules and something needs to be done to rein them in. The way impeachment works, in Trump's case just like Bill Clinton's case, he may be impeached by the House but no penalty by the Senate so is that the best use of resources since it appears there was no collusion, only potential obstruction into an investigation that for the underlying charges he would not have been found guilty? I don't know but I'm inclined to say no it's not worth the resources, but working on a good budget is. That doesn't mean go along with Trump because nothing can be done to him. He has identified some correct issues to work on but his tactics leave much to be desired to say the least, and his constant lies and bragging are tiresome at best. My original point was don't just pick on one party. Fault them all where it is needed. So, when a democrat comes in and does something wrong (like lie under oath or set up a private server contrary to the rules), don't defend them.

awteam2000

I hope Trump nor Clinton are the parties. But members of parties.

awteam2000

Gabriel, Your point is well made and I respect it. But excusing Trump for seeking help from the Russians to win the election, in comparison to not following the email rules and protocol causing no breach in security, aren’t comparable. Both represent bad conduct, bad choices but one having much worse consequences . It’s like comparing robbing a bank to crossing the street at the wrong location , drivers had to slam on their brakes but nobody was hurt, where as Trump’s interactions with the Russians have compromised our trust in our elections and the presidency.

gary4books

No. She did not know that. It had been done by other secretarties. But when they adivsed her to move to another (not so safe) server she did. The FBI could not find any crimes in that story. Just a person a bit muddled about what email was and how it moved from server to server so many times. Rank always have rights andpriviledges. If they really cared about what she had deleted, they would round up the lawyers that did that project and ask what they deleted and why. But they know all that stuff was so very innocent, they pretend it is invisible.

gary4books

Piffle" Never treason to not like an office holder.

Thewheelone

I agree with this columnist; we should be seeking out the most viable candidate to defeat the president in 2020. Unless he does something that will turn the majority of the senate against him, let's focus on getting someone elected to that will send him and his family packing to Mara Lago permanently.

DickD

What is scary is what Trump might do after the 2020 elections. Do we allow him to stay in office as he destroys more of the U.S.? And do not send him to Mara Lago, send him straight to jail. MAGA dump Trump

secpol1970

Lol destroy the U.S.? Best economy we have had in decades and you traitors still cling to that notion. Leftist democrats have shown that they hate this country and want to enact their loony laws. Ones that will actually destroy this country. Keep trying loser.

gary4books

One can have no job and get a few credit cards and live big until they take the cards back. We are getting short term benefits for long term policie sthat will not help. No higher education support for our students, les health insurance, tariffs, farmers in trouble, destruction of the natural environment. Our future is dim now.

rbtdt5

Doom and gloom Gary. Gotta love the fear factor.[thumbup][alien][thumbup]

threecents

[thumbup]Gary. Exactly right. Trump is pumping a bubble into the already recovering economy with tax cuts for corporations without corresponding spending cuts. The result is less money than previously projected is coming into the government and the debt is high than ever with no end in sight. Meanwhile healthcare costs continue to rise exponentially and business and environmental regulations are going away. We are squandering a healthy country and economy for a few years of added prosperity while Trump is in office. Then they will blame South Americans and Democrats.
