In her diary entry for July 15, 1944, Anne Frank wrote words that would harrow and challenge generations not yet born: “I still believe, in spite of everything, that people are truly good at heart.”

Less than a month later, “people” would discover Anne and seven other Jews hiding in a secret room. “People” would pack her in a crowded cattle car with only a barrel for a toilet and send her on a three-day journey to Auschwitz-Birkenau. The following February at Bergen-Belsen, “people” would watch her die of typhus. She was 15 years old.

All of which makes her words deeply troubling. You want them to be true, at times you may even believe them to be true, but at other times you look at the awful things “people” can do, and you wonder if she does not repose in us a faith too large, a faith we do not deserve.

In that regard, the thing Anne Frank said 75 years ago is not unlike the thing Alexander Vindman said on Tuesday. No, that is not to liken his story to hers or to suggest equivalence between them. That would be silly.

But it is to suggest that his words were troubling for much the same reason hers were. They came in his testimony in the House impeachment hearing. Rep. Sean Patrick Maloney had asked Vindman, a lieutenant colonel in the U.S. Army, about a passage in his opening statement wherein he assured his worried father — a Soviet immigrant who brought his family here when Vindman was little more than a toddler — that he would not get in trouble for telling the truth, even though that truth brought him into conflict with the president himself.

“Why do you have confidence that you can do that?” Maloney asked.

Said Vindman: “Congressman, because this is America. … And here, right matters.” The audience gave him an ovation.

Small wonder. His words were a veritable balm in Gilead for a nation sickened to its soul by the orgy of lies and alibis that now passes for leadership. And it hardly seemed worth it (indeed, would have been beside the point) to bring up all the times right has not mattered in America, to subpoena the ghosts of genocide, enslavement, exploitation and imprisonment haunting our history and ask them to testify against Vindman’s evocation of national virtue.

Because what he invoked was not America the actual, but America the aspiration — the more perfect union. And give us credit. If it’s true this is a country that has frequently betrayed its noblest ideals, it’s also true this is a country that had noble ideals to betray in the first place. It was to that America, that dream of America, that Vindman referred.

But even it has seen better days. Even the dream of who we are has been ransacked by the president and his defenders, men and women who would rather walk through fire in gasoline-soaked underwear than admit the truth of his malfeasance.

So even the dream of America emerges as some Bizarro World corruption of itself where proof is not proof, wrong is not wrong and bribery is fine so long as it’s only attempted. It becomes an open question what America stands for, what America means.

Then the immigrant soldier speaks with a moral clarity only true belief can confer. “And here,” he says, “right matters.”

Like Anne Frank’s words, his are a burden on your cynicism, a prod against your lassitude. You are not large enough to bear this faith, nor good enough to deserve it, but it moves you just the same.

Maybe because it demands you remember the America you dreamed, the self you dreamed, before Bizarro World came to power. Maybe because it reminds you of who it was both of you were trying to be.

Obadiah Plainsmen

Well here we are in 2k19 75 years after WW2 and all we hear is Russia, Russia, Russia. I guess Gen Patton was correct and the the USA committed the biggest screw - up in military history.

"We promised the Europeans freedom. It would be worse than dishonorable not to see they have it. This might mean war with the Russians, but what of it? They have no Air Force anymore , their

gasoline and ammunition supplies are low.I've seen their miserable

supply trains;mostly wagons draw by beaten up old hoses or oxen.

I'll say this ;the Third Army alone with very little help and with

damned few casulaties, could lick what is left of the Russians in six

weeks. You mark my words.Don't ever forget them. Someday we

will have to fight them and it will take six years and cost us six

million lives."

Obadiah Plainsmen

Ok what day you all those who think Trump and Putin are one in the same, was Patton right and did Roosevelt, Truman , screw up?

hayduke2

Perhaps America and Americans were exhausted after a grueling war and knew that Patton's claim was not sustainable or able to be accomplished in six weeks.

public-redux

jsk, There was a time when you would choose honesty over lying but that time appears to be in the past. Your initial claim was that many/five commenters alluded to Trump being a Russian mole. When pressed to identify those folk, you moved the goalposts to "mentioned" Russia etc. You are too intelligent to think using "Russia" in a sentence is equivalent to implying Trump is a Russian spy.

One commenter referred to Trump as a "useful idiot". Again, you have the brains to know that a mole is something close to the opposite of a useful idiot.

Finally, in your desperation to get to the five, no matter what, you included me as someone who wrote "Russia" in a comment. Which is hilarious because I do so only by quoting you. Using your logic, if you needed a fifth person, you should have included yourself as a commenter who alluded to Trump as a mole.

You are too smart to not know you are lying. Why do you do it?

jsklinelga

Public-redux

I suppose you are correct. I spoke quickly and including you was off the cuff. But if you look at the other comments there are direct references to Russia. In the logic of the day I presumed they oimplied Trump being a Russian asset as the others have stated before. After all 2+ 2 equals four. Is there any doubt my presumption wouldn't hold up under Shiff rules. Sorry my bad Happy Thanksgiving.

hayduke2

presumed - doesn't work that way jsk...

phydeaux994

....” you presumed they implied”....no presuming an implication from me, I have stated, based on observable actions, that Donald J Trump and the Republican Party are Russian Assets that take Vladimir Putin’s every word as Truth. The Russians have been conducting a misinformation barrage since WWII ended. And Putin finally got a SUCKER in the WH to believe it, along with UFO’s and Bigfoot and Kim Jong Un and Crown Prince Mohammed bin Satan.

jsklinelga

Love thy enemy. Do you know how utterly hard that is? No wonder so many shy from Christianity

Columns like this are infuriating. Comparing someone like Vindman to Anne Frank. Inferring Trump and his supporters are Nazi's. The same insidious hateful rhetoric that has filled this country for years. Actually rhetoric like this , homophobic, xenophobic, white supremacist, Nazi etc. is what help propel Trump to the Presidency. A strong reaction to hate.

Once again I suggest impeachment will not happen. The democrats have too much to lose. Once again we can see the narrative. Trump was absolutely"iron clad" guilty but obstructed justice. Each underhanded political stunt only galvanizes President Trump's base. And that demonstrates the "rightness" of Americans.

There is so much misinformation abounding. Half truths abound. Remarks like Vindman did not break the chain of command. The very deliberate, court martial eligible action that showed his real intentions Or that Nunes had secret meetings. I am so glad he is suing the media. Yes it is hard to love your enemy when you see a world of hate and dishonesty potentially impacting your grand kids future. You just have to have faith. Happy Thanksgiving everyone. (and pub,,. Phy, Matt. ole fool and hay directly mentioned Russia, lenin, putin, you were the fifth).

phydeaux994

Trump just negated the Chain of Command. Each of the three men he pardoned had been reported to their Superiors by their peers who knew they had crossed the line and had testified against them. They were being dealt with by the Military Courts and had been found liable. And Trump told them that what they did was o.k., and totally destroyed Military Justice, another of the American sacred trusts he has destroyed. BTW jsk, like Nunes, you keep dodging the questions.

jsklinelga

phy

I am not familiar with the details of the military case but i do know your first statement is wrong/ He is the superior officer.

phydeaux994

Which of the three are you speaking of? More than 150 Seals have lost their Trident Pins in the last 8 years for various reasons. Should they get theirs back now? If one of the others was a Superior Officer I stand corrected. There is great concern about Trump interfering in a tried and true Military System where they have their own system of justice. Using Trumps logic, no Military man/woman should face the consequences of their criminal behavior because they are soldiers.

Alice Jones

Not to mention that drumpf never served so has no idea what the military is all about. He’s so blindingly incompetent it defies logic.

phydeaux994

Mr. Trump has taken his cues, as The Post’s Dan Lamothe and Josh Dawsey detailed, not from information provided by Defense Secretary Mark T. Esper or other senior officials, but rather from Fox News and other right-wing media. The legal team for Chief Gallagher, according to The Post’s David Ignatius, included two friends of the president who are also former partners of his personal lawyer Rudolph W. Giuliani. The message: Why worry about chain of command, discipline and obedience when what matters is having the right connections?

matts853

“Actually rhetoric like this , homophobic, xenophobic, white supremacist, Nazi etc. is what help propel Trump to the Presidency”

Funny, this is the language this president speaks.

And as far as the historical references I and others have mentioned, we’re seeing a little too much of it repeating. And impeachment is a done deal. I’m sure you’ve seen by now that a judge just trumped Trump’s defense of all powerful “executive privilege”, which essentially compels all the president’s men to obey congressional subpoenas and testify. of course they won’t because they can’t tell the truth without implicating the president of his impeachable offenses. The judge said “the president is not a king.” And that’s what Trump thinks he is: a king, a dictator, emperor, fuherer, autocrat, tyrant, czar - all of these terms apply to his behavior. He has no respect for law and order and thinks he’s above it. He has blown up 250 years of tradition and respect for separation of powers and has undermined all of our most sacred institutions: military justice, intel community, national security, justice Dept, state Dept...everything we stand for is under attack by this man.

Glad you’re sharing in the frustration, JSK. But yours is grossly misdirected. Have a great Turkey day. Aside from the obligatory pardon of the turkey, I wonder what other criminals the president might pardon!

jsklinelga

Matt

Actually it is not funny Matt. One of the reasons Trump was elected was that he returned the language. Obviously people were sick of it. And the Judges ruling is just temporary. It will be appealed but this is exactly what I was talking about. There is no grounds for impeachment just as there was no collusion. The narrative will shift to obstruction of justice. But what many Anericans see is that no justice was present.

.

richardlyons

Delusional you are.

hayduke2

jsk - please show me the language similar to Trumps that George Bush, Bill Clinton, George W Bush, or Barack Obama used that is homophobic, xesnophobic, white supremacist like,Nazi or as divisive and rude and denigrating as President Trump. Please respond with examples. As an aside, I am sick of people making excuses, trying to spin and justify and otherwise giving a pass to possibly the most divisive man to occupy the office.

olefool

"All roads lead to Russia".... If you stop the bloviation and analyze all of Trumps actions you will clearly see that they all are designed to benefit Putin and degrade American values and policies, every one of them. Now he degrades and weakens our military to the benefit of Putin's quest for world domination. Surely, if you study the whole Ukraine mess Trump conjured up you will see how it was all an attempt to allow the Russians to overtake Ukraine's democracy and territory.

hayduke2

(and pub,,. Phy, Matt. ole fool and hay directly mentioned Russia, lenin, putin, you were the fifth). Man, you are grasping at straws. No where did I use the words Russia's mole and to discuss the Ukraine without referencing Russia is taking things out of context.. Wow, just wow. Hook, line and sinker!

phydeaux994

President Obama and Hillary and all Libs and Dems have endured a decade+ of insidious, hateful rhetoric from the RRR(RadicalRightRepublicans) and you never said a word jsk. Funny how things work.

Alice Jones

I’d argue that many shy from Christianity because like all religions, the dogma and unquestioned faith the flock puts in its leaders is misguided and people realize the fear they feel actually is about the people in positions of power that have abused hem for so long.

Alice Jones

What does the sham at 1600 have to lose?

hayduke2

The author of the article states "No, that is not to liken his story to hers or to suggest equivalence between them. That would be silly." And somehow, in your reading this, you jump to comparing Trump and his supporters to Nazi's. You made that leap and I don't understand your anger at the world and this country in general.

Obadiah Plainsmen

T'was the night before the impeachment vote when all through the "House" not a representative was stirring not even Shifty the mouse.

The articles of impeachment where all hung on the Speakers chair, in hopes that the Democrats would vote yea if they dare.

Obadiah Plainsmen

Trone, Raskin, where hugging each other in bed. While visions of Trump going down danced in their head.

And Pelosi and her mischief and Nader being a sap , rejoiced in their brains " we got Trump in a trap".

Obadiah Plainsmen

When up from the Senate came such a clatter. It was Lindsey Graham to say what is the matter?

Away with this impeachment he said with a flash . A trial was held and the articles where thrown in the trash.

matts853

Always the class act that brings so much insight and creativity to the discussion. Your wit and intellect are truly unparalleled in this forum. I’m in awe.

Obadiah Plainsmen

Trump emerged clean as the new- fallen snow. While Democrats took defeat with their heads hung low.

And what to my wondering eyes should appear.

President Trump and 4 mighty more years.

Now Rudy, Now Jared

Now Mick, Now Ivanka

On Flynn, on McGan

On Bolton, On Mnuchin

To the top, to the top of the wall ( yes that wall)

United we stand, divided we fall!

Wow, you’ve had a big day OP....Are you retired too?

jsklinelga

Several days ago I posted that I would not bet even odds on impeachment. That is when everyone was saying it was almost 100% assured. Many posting today still allude to Trump being a Russian mole even though that assertion came from a debunked .dossier compiled by a foreign intelligence officer paid by the DNC to generate dirt on candidate Trump.

Then the Mueller investigation: 30 million dollars spent on a questionable investigation that the Democrats now use to say Trump was guilty but he obstructed justice.

Now the impeachment. I would now actually consider betting it will not happen. The Democrats have far too much to lose. No doubt Biden's career would be ended with a Senate trial. The DNC and their operatives are on very perilous ground as more evidence is uncovered about their dealings in Ukraine. Uncovering the corruption surrounding the last administration could destroy the Democrat party for at least a decade.

But without an impeachment vote the Democrats can once again say Trump is definitely guilty he just obstructed justice. It is no wonder so many in this country are starting to realize the true motives of Shiff and company.

awteam2000

JSK, one’s party affiliation isn’t under impeachment but the individual in the White House.

The Mueller report laid out 10 examples of obstruction of justice, then the Russian propaganda narrative of Ukraine was peddled by Trump, followed by the surprise surrendering to Turkey N. Syria - All roads leading to Russia.

You know Trump’s political career started 3 years ago, with a guilty settlement of 25 million dollars for a phony college (Trump University) followed by, he and his kids banned from sitting on any nonprofit boards in NY. and ending with a plea agreement to return 2 million dollars pledged to vets. Dubious behavior doesn’t seem to have any affected on Trump or those that support him. Where as, Biden’s 40 year political career, no criminal blemishes. Right? Only since an acknowledged wrong doer, Trump doing what Trump does, smearing others, has there been any question of his character.

Btw, while we are looking at Hunter Biden’s credentials to sit on an energy board let’s look at this administration’s nepotism and their children’s credentials to hold government positions, like;

* Trump’s daughter works at the WH,

* Trump’s son in-law works at the WH,

* Rudy's son works at the WH (as sports advisor 🤦‍♂️)

* Barr's son in-law works at the WH,

* Barr's daughter works in the Treasury,

* Trump’s sons engagement in questionable foreign business deals,

* and Trump’s daughter getting Chinese patents and Saudi grants.

All on the government dime. What’s their credentials for their post? Did someone say nepotism?

Why didn’t Devin Nunes disclose that he was in Ukraine trying to dig up dirt on Biden? On the US dime.

Let’s call everyone to testify.

jsklinelga

awteam2000

, Thanks for proving my point. And as far as the people employed at least they are qualified. And when was Nunes in Ukraine? Somewhat typical of this whole proceeding.

awteam2000

🙇‍♂️

hayduke2

"hook, line and sinker" . Just wondering, why won't he let folks testify, what does he have his administration ignore subpoenas, why such a big turn over in his staff of "excellent" people, why so many connected to his election and inner circle convicted of crimes, what makes Jarad and Ivana qualified, why no press briefings , why lie daily ( latest, the wall is now electrified ), why ?

hayduke2

https://www.cnbc.com/2019/11/24/giuliani-ally-would-testify-that-nunes-staffers-hid-ukraine-meetings-from-schiff.html

awteam2000

My bad. Nunes met with the corrupt former Ukrainian prosecutor, Victor Shokin last year in Vienna not Kiev, with the soul purpose to dig up dirt on Biden. Thanks for correcting me. You’ve been keeping up with this matter better then me, and know all the dirt. Right?

Meanwhile couldn’t “ the loop”, John Bolton, Nick Mulvaney, Mike Pompeo, Barr, Pence and Perry clear up all the misunderstandings by testifying? Release the documents.

matts853

Qualified?! Too darn funny!!! You really have a great sense of humor, JSK. Keep the jokes coming, please.

shiftless88

jsk; it seems that everything that comes along in discussion that is important and relevant you claim not to know anything about it. That tells me where you get your news.

phydeaux994

Trump or America jsk, the Trump and the Republicans have asked you to choose one or the other. You can ignore the word of our Professionals like Lt. Col. Vindman and Ms. Hill and our entire Intelligence Community and believe the Fairytales that Vladimir has put in our horrendously gullible faux president trumps ear that he passes on to the horrendously gullible Uneducated he loves along with the horrendously gullible Deplorables like Nunes, or use a little Common Sense and stay an American. And you still haven’t explained how the Deep State has managed to Secretly dupe thousands of people into being part of the “HOAXES” employed to remove Trump from Office. Again, use a little Common Sense jsk. Please?

public-redux

"Many posting today still allude to Trump being a Russian mole ..."

I count one -- olefool -- not "many". Who else are you including in your count?

Name them, Jim.

"His words were a veritable balm in Gilead for a nation sickened to its soul by the orgy of lies and alibis that now passes for leadership." Can we get that in a prescrption-strength longlasting spray?

matts853

Trump is an archetypal demagogue, much in the way of Hitler. Now, I am NOT saying Trump is inherently evil and capable of genocide. But there are valid comparisons. Trump pedals in propaganda. He is stupid. He is vindictive and ruthless against his perceived political enemies, even threatening them or suggesting they should be executed. He is a paranoid narcissist. And he doesn’t listen to any of his top military advisers.

He’s also a “useful idiot” in true Lenin Style. Putin is playing Trump and our Republican Congress as precisely that. None of them are acting in the best interests of our nation right now.

But hey, Trump supporters, keep up your slavish devotion to him and Fox News, because y’all are Trump’s own band of useful idiots. Thanks!

threecents

Big difference is Trump's country is not desperately poor. If it was...

veritas

Useful idiots abound. Many of them are blissfully unaware of their idiocy.

matts853

Self awareness is a great virtue, V. So glad you possess it.

veritas

Pity that you do not.

threecents

Oh yah, well... you dress funny.

hayduke2

Very mature Veritas...

richardlyons

Case in point.

prg45fan

The projection by the rabid Trump haters on this board is not surprising. He is Making America Great Again even while being attacked on a daily basis by the real criminals and the propagandized media. Haters gonna hate. All because he beat the pantsuit off of Hillary. Simply amazing!

richardlyons

[yawn]

Obadiah Plainsmen

Well Mr. Pitts Anne Frank was quite naive in her observation of the human heart. In Jeremiah 17:9 God writes "The heart is deceitful above all things and beyond cure— who can understand it?" And this" rights matters" thing!! Who's "rights" are you talking about? The rights of the 63 million people who voted for Trump, The rights of the Constitution that elected President Trump, The "rights" of the Constitution to dispose of this President, the "rights" of the 65 million who voted for HRC? Or the "right" to dig up anything and everything to bring this President down. America has changed ,the rights of "we the people" no longer exists, it is the "right"of us against them. Get over it!

awteam2000

Wrong again, Obadiah.

The Constitution gives Congress the authority and the “right” to impeach and remove "The President, Vice President, and all civil officers of the United States" upon a determination that such officers have engaged in treason, bribery, or other high crimes and misdemeanors.

The basic sentiment of the Trump ‘cult’ isn’t that the president did anything wrong but they want this guy no matter if he shoots someone on 5th Ave. The reality is that when it comes to impeachment, there aren’t any protections for the president laid out in the Constitution. In fact, experts say that pretty much any “rights” Congress give Trump are above and beyond what they’re required to do. Trump hasn’t been charged with a crime and impeachment isn’t a legal proceeding, so he doesn’t have any of the “rights” you hear about on “Law and Order,” including due process. In other words in the world of impeachment, “rights” mean whatever the duly elected majority party in the House of Representatives thinks it should mean. Get over it.

awteam2000

Also, the 63 million vote argument is lame 😒. Trump lost the popular vote by 3 million. Regardless, you may not recall but Nixon won reelection by a real landslide, winning both the electoral college and the popular vote, then removed from office for obstruction of justice, abuse of power, and contempt of Congress choosing to resign.

Dwasserba

It's true, I don't understand your heart.

threecents

God wrote that? Also, what do you have against Mike Pence as president?

sevenstones1000

And sadly, right now LT Col Vindman is being place under the protection of the Army because Donald Trump and his minions have threatened him and his family.

jsklinelga

Mr. Pitts is correct. "This is America and right matters" In a desperate attempt to politically harm President Trump many on the left overlook one important aspect of the Biden/Burisma/Ukraine debacle. It is not just President Trump that wants this corruption investigated it is the American people. And they have wanted it investigated for years. So yes, much to the perplex ion of the left (who's news sources protect the left) Trump's base has been further galvanized by his strong and courageous leadership. And not only Burisma but the much more corrupt and financially rewarding dealings of the Biden's with China. Not to mention the Clinton Foundation and the immoral and unethical DNC. Mr. Pitt is right: This is America and right matters."

sevenstones1000

And yet, it’s the Trump Crime Family that just got slapped with millions in fines for robbing from a charity. Explain that.

threecents

The "liberal media" barely mentioned that.

olefool

If "This is America and right matters." isn't it high time we investigated the corruption on our own porch, the White House. I need not to get into the depth of the Russian Mole's, and his cohorts corruption goes, we already have seen those disturbing and unlawful actions. The problem is, as evidenced by posters like jsk, that the Trump loyalists are so infatuated with Trump that they deem him to have replaced God as their savior and are hard set in their adoration of their new religious beliefs as they worship at the altar of Trumps criminality. Those people even go so far as to hint on a civil war if Trump is impeached or losses the next election. They say they have two trillion bullets waiting for their big day. Does that "sound right and matter to you"?

hayduke2

jsk - don't you feel silly that the myth has once again been debunked, that Nunes and others sought to push the Russian generated myth and that misguided folks like you bought it "hook, line and sinker." The Republican led Senate Intelligence committee has even debunked it but here you go once again buying into Trump's con. And you see "strong and courageous leadership" when others see misguided and chaotic leadership - kind of a North Korean attitude.

matts853

The irony that Russia is manipulating our election process and then spreading misinformation to deflect from their activity which our president and republicans buy into like a bunch of Lenin’s “useful idiots” is inescapable.

awteam2000

JSK simply parrots and spins Trump’s defunct conspiracy theories. If I thought he had a full grasp of the facts, I would call him a liar 🤥. But I think he’s almost as delusional as Rick Perry saying the president, “Trump though imperfect, was the "chosen one" sent to accomplish God's plan .” How do you spell ‘kiss-up’?😳

jsklinelga

It is a shame this theatrical columnist could not take his own advice: "right matters."

Wow! Compare Mr. Vindman (using Lt. Col. would be a disgrace) to Anne Frank and by inference Trump's America to Nazism. He was a disgruntled, lower level staff member that thought his policy decisions were wiser than the President's

"Vindman finally admitted he did not know of “a crime or anything of that nature.” But he “made a moral and ethical judgment” that he thought it was “wrong” and that he “also had deep policy concerns” (155).

olefool

Sorry jsk, this letter's comport is beyond your IQ level. If you saw Vindman and heard his words you would know that you're as wrong as sin. Why do you keep embarrassing yourself in these columns?

threecents

Vindman is literally and figuratively unimpeachable. He is an ideal that I hope young people try to emulate. There are many excellent roll models out there, despite Trump and his supporters.

hayduke2

jsk - you say using Lt. Col would be a disgrace. I, sir, think you have just disgraced yourself by denigrating a distinguished military officer. You should be ashamed. Your anger and righteousness has crossed a line. Objectivity and facts no longer matter to you, confirming this column's premise. Sad.

MRS M

Thanks hay, exactly. When you think Trump and the deplorables can't go any lower, they still find a way....AND, they haven't reached bottom yet.

threecents

[thumbup]Mrs M, I thought we hit bottom with two terms of Bush, but then we went about a kilometer deeper into the muck for Trump. We could still go deeper.

jsklinelga

hayduke2

Objectivity and facts crossed the line? I listened to his testimony. It does not take a psych major to understand him. He obviously and intentionally broke the chain of command. If this was the My Lai massacre I would say he would be justified. But as he stated he was worried how this might effect policy towards Ukraine, He put the interest of Ukraine, his native land, above his duties as an officer of the US Army in an highly select position. I believe your righteous indignation is misplaced. In a sense he did disgrace the uniform and his oath.

hayduke2

Nonsense - you watch but don't listen. What chain of command did he break? He immediately informed superiors of his concerns and/or information he received. Sorry, but you've lost any sense of credibility.

matts853

JSK, you’re a true red anti-American. So glad I don’t live next door to someone like you.
